By Anne Yang and Michael Altman, Broken Wand is about a grandfather and his teenaged grandson, who’ve grown apart. The years haven’t been kind to the grandfather, who at one point in time was a successful magician. Along with his grandson, they performed the most surreal magic shows. However, the boy grew up, and found the world of video games, and the chasm between grandparent and grandchild grew wider. Now, the grandson has returned to visit the old man.
The grandfather, who was also known as The Amazing Birdum is quite excited, but the grandson isn’t quite. Broken Wand is a fine animated short that perfectly captures the essence of the distance we develop with our elderly relatives, as we grow older.
The grandfather, who is nonplussed by his grandson’s lack of interest, tries everything to entertain the boy, and get that smile he so desperately craves, but to no avail. The animation work is stellar, with the attention to detail shining through in each frame, and the accompanying music complements the action on screen perfectly.
While Broken Wand does have a bleak premise and makes you feel for the grandfather, it does end on a good note. Check the short out here!
