Bromance in Bollywood

The term ‘Bromance‘ was first coined by Dave Carnie, the editor of a skate-board magazine named Big Brother, back in 1990s. Its emergence can be attributed to the beginning of a quasi-revolutionary alteration in gender-roles, as the idea of alpha male began to get hackneyed and men started getting increasingly comfortable with their emotional side. Increased awareness about homosexuality also contributed to this all-new worldview. Men had started embracing their male-friendships as a crucial part of their lives, openly, in a way that only women had so far. Bromance was here to stay!

Popular culture has been exploring the nuances of male camaraderie since donkey years. Here is a list of films through the annals of Bollywood that have done a fantastic job show-casing bromance.

Dosti (1964)

Dosti is a touching tale of unadulterated, unselfish love between two young men, one blind, the other crippled. As one another’s support system in the ruthless city of Bombay, Sushil Kumar and Sudhir Kumar‘s portrayals of Ramu and Mohan, won the film a Filmfare award.

Sholay (1975)

Words are few to describe this masterpiece. Probably figuring on the favorite films list of most Bollywood buffs, Sholay has remained timelessly enjoyable. Jai and Veeru’s camaraderie can make one chuckle and sob simultaneously. The famous  Yeh Dosti Hum Nahi Todenge and the bike with the side-car remains etched in our memories.

Dil Chahta Hai (2001)

Groundbreaking in many ways, this was a coming-of-age film. Unprecedented in the way it dealt with youth issues, the most noteworthy takeaway from the film remains the moving friendship of Akash, Sameer and Sid.

Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara (2011)

Another one with a Farhan Akhtar association, Zindagi Na Milegi Dobara was much acclaimed for its poignant vignette of three friends, portrayed by Hrithik Roshan, Abhay Deol, and Farhan Akhtar trying to keep their friendship alive, against all odds. Fists are thrown, love is found, and bonds are strengthened. ZNMD serves oodles of bromance with a few dollops of everything else.

Yeh Jawani Hai Deewani (2013)

While it is true that prime focus of the film is on Bunny, played by Ranbir Kapoor, and his journey, there are unmistakable shades of heavy bromance between him and Avi, his decadent friend portrayed by Aditya Kapoor. They fight, part ways, but always manage to mend fences.

Aligarh (2015)

The much-awaited Aligarh releases on Friday. Apart from a backdrop that deals with homosexuality, it also showcases an unexpected friendship that blooms under trying circumstances.
