Priyadarshan lost major points with me with the trashy comedy Hera Pheri, and this is a good chance he had to redeem himself. Bumm Bumm Bole is a sweet story about a boy losing his sister’s shoes and how he tries to get her a new pair.
Adapted from Majid Majidi’s Children Of Heaven, Bumm Bumm Bole takes you the home of a family that is facing hard times. It also takes you a school. Bumm Bumm Bole also drags you through a terrorist angle, a completely unnecessary attempt at making you ‘feel’ for some of the characters.
Despite being slapped with drama that is so not required, Bumm Bumm Bole does have some delightful moments. All the scenes that have Pinu (Darsheel Safary) and his sister Rimzhim are the best ones in the film. Pinu loses Rimzhim’s shoes and tries to steal them from the gates of a temple, and later runs a marathon to win a pair of shoes (which are the third prize).
Pinu’s dad (Atul Kulkarni) loses his job, and then gets interrogated about his former employer’s murder, making it impossible for him to secure another job. He tries his hand at odd jobs with not much success, and is bitter for most part of the movie. Pinu runs an errand for his uncle, only to find him getting shot at by the police for being involved in terrorist activities.
Bumm Bumm Bole could’ve been a terrific film made for being watched time and again, but Priyadarshan just had to put all the extra-serious stuff in there. He couldn’t stop at showing the ultra-cute Rimzhim running around, and simply had to have a bomb blast, a rape attempt, cops killing a terrorist etc.
The marathon scene is particularly funny – Darsheel wants to win the third prize but wins the first place in the race. His coach is elated and lifts Darsheel, who is crying because he came first, and not third.
It’s all good for Darsheel, but Priyadarshan should think about what kind of Hindi films he has made in the past (Gardish, Virasat) before wrecking good stories like the one Bumm Bumm Bole has. Still, it’s better than making Paresh Rawal act like a bumbling fool.
