Almost every time someone makes a film on sensitive topics, the Censor Board, without fail, shreds the film down in order to dilute the impact of the topic. The reason that one usually gets is that the cuts were essential and were made in an attempt to make the film “audience-friendly” or “family friendly”. So in that case, what’s the point of having an A rating for films? And, should films that have misogynic or raunchy content be allowed to see the light of the day? Perhaps, this is the kind of value-filled content the Censor Board doesn’t mind giving a green signal to.
It’s absolutely amusing to watch, when a film like Udta Punjab that brings out the stark reality of the drug problem in Punjab, has to suffer brutal cuts. And to make it worse, the word “Punjab” from the title also needs to be dropped, just so that the film can hit the theaters. So to get thing straight, a film that portrays sensitive issues is considered to be a potential nuisance creator, while it’s absolutely fine to live in ignorance and suffer in silence. Government logic? Censor Board logic? What do you think?
