It’s time to get back in the arena. The Hunger Games returns to the big screen with Catching Fire. This is the second movie in the series. The movie is directed by Frank Lawrence of Constantine and I am Legend fame. Everyone’s favorite female archer is back, Katniss Everdeen. Blood, guts and glory beckons. In case anyone forgot what the Hunger Games movie was about, here is a brief recap:
It’s a bleak and dark future for Earth. There is desolation and people have been subjugated by a totalitarian regime. Sounds familiar, doesn’t it? Anyway, let’s go on. The Hunger Games is a televised tournament of a group of young adults who are selected to fight to the DEATH! Katniss is chosen from her “District” to participate and bring glory to her district. She goes through a “Rocky-esque” training regime. And she is good at putting arrows into her enemies. The tournament gets underway and after a few setbacks, Katniss pulls ahead. Gory and bloody, the battle unfolds onto the screen and also across this dystopian world. Jennifer Lawrence brings a unique take to this amazingly fierce and independent character. There is love on the battlefield and mutant dogs too. Who knew? That’s the first movie for you.
Now coming to this new movie. Catching Fire is the return of Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark as victors of the 74th Hunger Games. You’d think that their troubles had ended. However, it’s only just begun. There is unrest spreading like fire through the districts. The politicians have taken notice of the victors. Plots abound and conspiracies unfold. The masses yearn for freedom from tyranny. Katniss and Peeta are selected to compete in the next Hunger Games, the Quarter Quell. We get to see the next level opponents. Hardened killers out for blood. Our heroine now faces her biggest challenge yet, survival. The battlefield has changed. The trailer showcases all of this. I am guessing that there is more to see, more discover. Catching Fire has a very intense and a fast-paced feel to it. The visuals are greyer than the earlier movie, giving the trailer a very bleak look. You get the feeling that the war is about to begin. All you are left thinking about is “What’s gonna happen next?”
This movie promises a ride into the dark side of a world lost. The hope of the people who are suffering is tied to the lives of Katniss and Peeta. This should make for an amazing watch. Remember every fire starts with a spark? Watch The Hunger Games: Catching Fire and be a part of that fire.
