Femina Miss India Universe 2001, actress and now, songstress! Yes, that’s right. Celina Jaitley has re-recorded the classic Uthe Sabke Kadam as a part of the United Nations’ campaign for LGBT rights. She has joined forces with Neeraj Shridhar, the Bombay Vikings frontman and Bollywood singer, for the track.
The video, titled The Welcome, starts off by showing preparations for a typical Indian wedding. The family members, who have been waiting for the son to return, are in for a shock. They are startled when they see their son’s partner, who happens to be male. In the course of the video, the family goes from shock and sadness to acceptance. Of course, all of this is accompanied by colors, festivities and a song.
The Welcome sends the message that everyone should get a warm welcome from their respective families, irrespective of their sexuality. It has been promoted by the hashtag, #TheWelcome on social media, and has quickly gone viral.
This isn’t a first for the actress, who is also the Goodwill Ambassador for Human Rights Free and Equal Campaign. She has previously supported the cause by taking part in Mumbai’s gay pride march and re-launching the magazine Bombay Dost.
