Choti Movie, Bada Dhamaka: 11 Small Films With Big Performances!

Often when small movies are made with big stars, their performances tend to overshadow the performances of the rest of the cast. But thankfully, this trend is changing one movie at a time. You'll see some splendid performances by small stars in movies today. Performances that are not only essential to the storyline of the movie, but are also so wonderful that the movie would not be the same without them. As the sensibilities of the Indian audience matures, the taste for off-beat movies is getting stronger. And to the delight of film-lovers and critics, there's no dearth of fabulous movies. Movies that boast of strong plot lines and subject matter that has the ability to touch the audience. 

We have a list of 11 films that have fared well over the last decade, and given us splendid performances on a shoe-string budget.   

Khosla Ka Ghosla! (2006)
It marked the directorial debut of Dibakar Banerjee. The film was well-received and even won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi for 2006. The credit for this goes to incredible performances by Parvin Dabas, Vinay Pathak, Ranvir Shorey and many others in spite of the presence of big industry names like Anupam Kher and Boman Irani.  


Dor (2006)
An incredible, raw tale of companionship and redemption. Dor stars Ayesha Takia, Gul Panag and Shreyas Talpade. The performances, story and direction were appreciated by the critics and the audience. The film directed by Nagesh Kukunoor bagged awards in several film festivals.   


Bheja Fry (2007)
Made on a shoe-string budget, Bheja Fry starred Rajat Kapoor, Vinay Pathak, Sarika, Milind Soman and Ranvir Shorey in entertaining roles. Although based on a French movie Le Dîner de Cons, Bheja Fry's plot was praised and the film became a sleeper hit. 


Dasvidaniya (2008)
An interesting movie about a man's bucket list. Vinay Pathak gives one of his best performances as Amar Kaul.  The film's title is a pun on the list of ten things that Amar Kaul decides to do before he dies. 


Udaan (2010)
Udaan was power-packed in terms of performances. Critics called it extraordinary and it received rave reviews. Rajat Barmecha made his debut with this coming-of-age film. His performance won him instant recognition.  


Paan Singh Tomar (2012) 
Irrfan Khan's portrayal of the bandit Paan Singh Tomar was splendid and won him many awards including the 60th National Film Award for Best Actor. But the performances of the supporting cast – Mahie Gill, Vipin Sharma and Nawazuddin Siddiqui – were equally worthy of praise.  


The Lunchbox (2013)
In a fateful mix-up of dabbas, a romantic relationship blooms amidst lunch breaks and delicious food. The story of The Lunchbox is fresh and touching, and Irrfan Khan and Nimrat Kaur's performances were loved by all.


Masaan (2015)
A drama which revolves around four lives based in Varanasi. Richa Chadda, Vicky Kaushal, Sanjay Mishra and Shweta Tripathi gave moving performances that won the approval of the critics and media alike. 


Nil Battey Sannata (2016) 
Ria Shukla and Swara Bhaskar's spectacular performances in Nil Battey Sannata makes the film worth a watch. The story revolves around the mother-daughter duo and their story. The film was appreciated by the critics and the audience. 


Dhanak (2016) 
An incredible tale of hope. The journey of a sister and brother, Dhanak is as touching as it is sweet. This movie proves that talent comes in many forms. The kids – Hetal Gada and Krrish Chhabria – have given marvelous performances. Dhanak will surely leave you with moist eyes and a smile.


Pink (2016) 
Amitabh Bachchan's performance is splendid as usual but the girls in the movie are no less! Taapsee Pannu, Kirti Kulhari and Andrea Tariang have given noteworthy performances in the film. If you haven't seen the movie yet, you must catch it soon.
