Verdict: A Dulquer Salmaan show all the way!
Comrade in America is a film based on Communism which is Mollywood’s current favorite theme. The film directed by Amal Neerad stars Dulquer Salmaan, Siddique, Soubin Shahir, Karthika Muralidharan, Dileesh Pothen and others. Written by Shibin Francis and music by Gopi Sunder, Comrade in America is a film that could have been much more than what it is.
The plot of the film revolves around Ajipan or Aji Mathew (Dulquer Salmaan), a hardcore Communist who has conversations about his life with Che Guevara, Lenin, and Karl Marx every time he is drunk. Ajipan is very popular among the youth and even beats ups rowdy bus-drivers and cleaners who harass college-kids. While Ajipan is a communist, his father Mathew (Siddique) is a Congressman but this difference in ideologies does not mean they pick up fights at home. They occasionally pull each other’s legs but in this home, no one is against anyone’s choices which is made clear by Mathew when he openly accepts Sarah, the girl his son Ajipan chooses for himself.
While studying in a college in Pala Ajipan falls in love with Sarah Mary Kurian (Karthika Murali) who comes to Kerala from the U.S. for her studies. But her parents who come to know of their relationship trick Sarah into going back to America. The rest of the story revolves around Ajipan’s journey to America in search of his love, Sarah and the hurdles he faces in getting to his love. Will he succeed? Watch the movie to know.
This film sure does have the potential to be an incredible success but it fails in various departments. A tighter script would have done wonders for this film. For example, the love story of Aji and Sarah seems rushed, a little more time to develop their relationship would have definitely been better for the audience to connect with them.
The first half revolves around Aji’s life in Pala which includes friends and party members Soubin Shahir, Dileesh Pothen. These two provide the comic element that was much needed in the film but they definitely deserved more screen time. Siddique who plays the role of Dulquer’s father was super impressive even though he had a brief role and Karthika Muralidharan who made her debut with this film has acted well. We can’t wait to see what this young actress has in store for us in the future. Tamil actor John Vijay who is introduced in the second half puts on a decent performance and so does Chandini Sreedharan.
The superstar of Malayalam film industry Dulquer as always manages to impress everyone with his good looks and acting skills. The man keeps improving with each film he does.
Coming to the direction of the film, Amal Neerad does well but not enough to impress. The major portion of the second half is shot near the US-Mexico border which is where a number of people try to sneak into U.S. for a better life. While a few succeed, a large number of them fail. And while there is a mention of the ordeal and struggle these people undergo there is no portrayal of the same which is just plain disappointing. The music by Gopi Sunder is pretty decent and the only catchy track is Vaanam Thilathilakkunu, the one sung by Dulquer.
