City of Ghosts Review: Jio MAMI Mumbai Film Festival 2017

Matthew Heineman in 2015 came with Cartel Land which was about a group of vigilantes fighting the Mexican drug cartel. We have seen a lot of atrocities by terrorist groups worldwide through the news channel. But there is a different level of a reality check when you see a series of such footage live without censorship. The situation in places like Syria has never been simple and although we read and watch a lot about the refugees, their personal battles as they try to leave their home is haunting. Raqqa is Being Slaughtered Silently used the modern social tools we have on hand to reveal how their home is being turned into a city of ghosts.

City of Ghosts

Background and Story:

The Syrians revolted against Assad who was ruling over them for about 40 years. Before a new government system could come in its place, ISIS took over, declaring it an Islamic state. The ISIS made sure that the city was cut off from the world and there was no information going in or out of the city, leaving the rest of the world in ignorance. This led to the ISIS doing what they pleased – public executions and ruthless recruiting without any repercussions. Until, some of them managed to get out and create a page which posted daily updates on the atrocities carried out in their cities. ISIS was quick to respond by harming their loved ones and creating high-definition videos of the same. And while several members met gruesome ends, the group continued to carry forward its aim. The documentary is about citizen journalism at its finest. The group was honored at the awards in New York City and yet the whole thing pales in comparison to its real efforts.

Why You Should Watch:

The movie is meant to shock and does not pull any punches when it comes to exactly showing how it was. There is a scene where we see Hamoud (one of the founders of the organization) watching a video of his father being killed and that only enforces him to stay more focused on his mission rather than de-railing him. There are a bunch of three to four guys in a room smoking cigarettes and coordinating with the team inside the city. Their aim is to not only let the world know about the problem but also make sure that the ideas and ideals ISIS upholds are eradicated.
