Movies come and go. Some remain in our heart and some are forgotten. Over the years, Bollywood has given us many potboilers. If there are Khans or Kapoors, few action scenes and an item number; the movie is an absolute hit! Though most of the movies nowadays cross the 100-crore mark, there are a few films that are ignored. And that’s not a new thing. There are many hidden gems in Bollywood, which were once branded as flops at the box office. Yes, sometimes it does take time to find a winner.
Here are five classic films that were flops at the box office.
Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro
Directed by Kundan Shah and starring Naseeruddin Shah and Ravi Baswani, Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro was a major flop. The film traces the hilarious misadventures of two amateur photographers, who gets entangled in a web of dirty politics and crime. Of course, the film was a satire. But released way back in 1983, we think satire wasn’t a genre that the aam junta liked to watch.
Kaagaz Ke Phool
As heartbreaking as Guru Dutt’s life, this film follows the heart-rending story of a Bollywood director’s rise and fall in the industry. The film, which released in 1959, was way ahead of its time. And as a result, it was a box office disaster. The plot was way too complex for the public to understand.
Andaz Apna Apna
No matter how many times you’ve watched this movie, the puns never get old. However, this Bollywood caper directed by Rajkumar Santoshi was a major flop at the box office. Even the Khans couldn’t help it.
This classic Yash Raj film didn’t impress the public much. The film is said to be inspired by the real-life love triangle of Amitabh Bachchan, Jaya Bachchan and Rekha. We guess, way back in 1981, this reason just wasn’t enough for people to watch the movie. Though it failed to make a place in the audience’s heart that time, Silsila is now a major Bollywood classic. Also, this was the last film in which Amitabh Bachchan and Rekha shared the screen.
When Swades released, many people complained about its duration and also termed it as Shah Rukh Khan‘s worst film ever. But now if you look back, Swades wasn’t really a bad movie. It had a good plot, a stellar cast that gave good performances and very good music by A. R. Rahman. We really wish SRK would do more such films.
If you haven’t watched these films yet, we suggest you watch them right away! You will not be disappointed!
