Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2: Film Review

With food porn taking over the internet (after cat videos of course!), watching three-dimensional marshmallow’s with cute faces and adorable-looking strawberries running around in their tiny green paws isn’t gastronomically delightful. Especially when you are on an empty stomach.
Well, leaving hunger aside, here I am referring to Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2. Yup, Flint Lockwood, the mad genius is back. The sequel picks up from where the 2009 mouth-watering comedy concluded. Here, the neighborhood genius Flint Lockwood is offered a job by Chester V (the villain) for a conglomerate known as Live Corp. Flint moves to San Franjose with his family and friends. But trouble strikes again and Flint travels back to Swallow Falls, which now resembles a spooky island, to solve the mysterious case of disappearing Live Corp teams.
Remember Flint’s last invention? ‘Flint Lockwood Diatonic Super Mutating Dynamic Food Replicator’ FLDSMDFR in short. Lockwood finds out that FLDSMDFR is still active, and it has begun to produce various species of food animals. If you drooled over the spaghetti tornadoes and cheeseburger rain you can drool some more in this sequel. Only that, you will be drooling over ‘Foodimals’ (which will slightly remind you of the prehistoric creatures in Steven Spielberg’s The Jurassic Park). And on the menu you will find Tacodiles, Shrimpanzees, Hippotatomuses, Cheespiders and much more. Kind of irksome though.
The new characters Chester V with his weird, flowing hand movements voiced by Will Forte and his assistant Barb (an ape aided with a human brain) voiced by Kristen Schaal adds up to the perkiness of the film. Bill Hadder and Anna Faris kept up to the energy levels of the first movie in the sequel as well.
When it comes to animation, imagination runs wild, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 embraces wilderness at its best. With the beautifully-animated ‘Foodimals’, you can either go ‘aww…’ or ‘Laugh Out Loud’. With characters yelping out one-liner’s like ‘There’s a leek in the boat’ and ‘scared the jelly out’ the humor level was commendable. However, at some point the movie gets ridiculously irritating and silly. Overdoing things and also the smart one-liners never helped. Despite the creatively-done characters and scenes, the movie loses out the charm of the slapstick comedy of the first movie.
Director Cody Cameron who worked as a storyboard artist on the first three Shrek films, as well as the Sony Pictures Animation films Surf’s Up, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, Open Season 2, and Open Season 3 did quite an impressive job. Some of the characters like the family of pickles, the strawberries and the marshmallows looked deliciously adorable. If you can live with a lose plot, Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2 is a movie which definitely will satisfy you visually with brilliant style effects, animation, lighting and shading.
