Verdict: A chilling revenge drama.
current favorite genre is horror-comedy. Ever since Raghavendra Lawrence
and Sundar C
began making horror-comedies, other filmmakers have automatically followed suit. Horror comedies offer several thrilling moments, and when you drizzle that with comedy, it works well for the family audience. This week’s horror comedy is Darling 2
, that is the second installment in the Darling
franchise. While Darling presented horror with commercial elements, director Sathish Chandrasekaran‘s
Darling 2 is quite different. It works as a horror film, that has very limited comedy to offer. The reason for it is that it’s inspired from real-life events. However, the common factor with both these films is that they work on a similar template, and that is: revenge.
The film’s opening scenes are black and white sequences, in which you see a young girl possessed by a spirit. This quite nicely sets the mood of the film. The film then introduces us to a group of friends who decide to go on a vacation and stay in a huge mansion in Valparai. Their lives go topsy-turvy when they begin to encounter paranormal activities. The plot of the film may sound familiar but in the execution it has something different to offer. The revenge drama in the film is what keep the story going.
The first half of the film is filled with spine-chilling moments. The scene in which the friends experience spooky activities at the stroke of midnight is an example. The second half of the film is a full-fledged revenge drama. The film offers ample chills, and the humor quotient in the film is also not bad. The film’s biggest strength are its visuals. The steely grey and blue tones offer an eerie atmosphere. Credits to cinematographer Vijay Kartik for it. The CG visuals of the Tusker are also a plus. And it seems like it was placed in the film to increase the visual appeal. Though, the narrative style includes too many flashback sequences that may confuse the viewer. The film’s slow-paced narration is another downer.
The film’s better performances are from actors Kalaiarasan, Arjunan
and Kaali Venkat.
But, the show-stealer is undoubtedly, Hari
. There are a lot of fun and engaging moments when he appears on the screen.
