Darling: Film Review – Keeps you entertained only because of its rib-tickling humor.

It’s the season where horror-comedies are ruling the Tamil film industry and there’s no escaping it! Relying solely on a few gags and no fright, comes this year’s first horror-comedy, Darling. This is a film that keeps you entertained as it focuses more on the characters and the irreverent banter between them.  But working on a wafer-thin plot, director Sam Anto’s Darling feels like a long and stretchy film that eventually turns predictable.

Remake of the super-hit Telugu film ‘Prema Katha Chitram‘, this film marks music-composer G.V. Prakash’s acting debut. The characters in this film are parodies of those you see in TV shows. A particular scene in which Karunas tries to confront the ghost is terrific. The film’s writing could have relied more on confronting the ghost and finding out what she wants, rather than running around in circles to establish how loud the ghost can screech. The ‘scary’ ghost here did not cause fear, hence it seems like a mere caricature. Adding an ‘emotional touch’ to films at the end is the latest fad adopted by filmmakers. It would have worked for this one, if only the screenplay was slightly more original.
The film doesn’t boast any original humor, but it still works like magic due to its stellar set of comedians and their quick timing jokes. Although brief,Rajendran aka ghost Gopal Varma’s comic timing is effortless and his CGI introductory shot as the Ghost Ride is superb! Bala Saravana’s humor is quite impressive. But the actor that will have you in splits is Karunas. His performance is extremely enjoyable.
G.V. Prakash seems almost uninterested throughout the film. His expression is unreadable and his voice seems faint. Nikki Galrani delivers a decent performance, but you wish her character had a little more energy.
Why you should watch the film?
Watch this film if you’re a fan of horror-comedies and if you want to have a few good laughs at the cinema.
