As we all know by now, Leonardo DiCaprio finally won the Oscar he deserved. Congratulations to him on not just the win, but also how he used his acceptance speech to talk about saving the planet! While we have previously spoken about his stellar roles for which Leo should have won an Oscar, he is much more than that. Here’s some interesting trivia with regards to some of the movies he has starred in:
This is the film which finally got him that long-awaited Oscar, but not with any ease. The actor calls this role as the toughest performance in his entire career span till date. The actor had to study two Native American languages, he ate raw meat (bison liver) even though he is a strict vegetarian, well, let’s just allow him to do the talking: “I can name 30 or 40 sequences that were some of the most difficult things I’ve ever had to do – whether it’s going in and out of frozen rivers, or sleeping in animal carcasses, or what I ate on set – i was enduring freezing cold and possible hypothermia constantly.”
This was his first film in more than 15 years where he doesn’t get top billing; it was also his first ever fully villainous role. While filming, Leo once stopped mid-scene because he was finding it difficult to use so many racial slurs. His co-star Samuel L. Jackson might have helped him with that, but there was another scene, where Leo probably should have stopped mid-way, but didn’t. It was the dinner scene, where his character learns he has been deceived. In a fit of anger he slams his hand on the table, accidentally breaking a glass bowl and actually cutting his hand. The true method actor never broke character, the camera kept rolling, the co-actors carried on, the director did not interrupt, allowing this take to make it to the final cut.
Based on the life of Howard Hughes, the film got Leo nominated for 3 awards for best actor. Maybe what made him play out the character so effortlessly was the fact that both he, and his character Hughes, suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder aka OCD. The film has numerous instances where his OCD gets the better of him – in the hangar, washrooms, at the dinner party, during isolation, etc. Leo revealed in an interview that he has had OCD since he was a child; even while walking on the film`s set he would have to step on all road stains in his path.
Wolf of Wall Street
During an interview, Leo swore that he had never consumed drugs, because of his upbringing and just lack of curiosity. For this film, he had to speak to a drug expert to help him act like he was under the influence. He and Jonah Hill also watched a YouTube video called ‘Drunkest Man in the World‘ to help them enact the infamous Quaaludes scene. This was the same scene where he actually strained his back (and couldn’t do another take) while getting into the car. Also, the cocaine snorted in the film was made from crushed B vitamins.
Another honorable mention would be during the filming of Blood Diamond, where he almost got chomped down by a shark, but was saved by a whisker. While we are sure that there might be loads of such trivia, these have got to be some of his best. Congratulations once again, Leo!
