Diljit Dosanjh, earlier known as Daljit Singh Dosanjh, debuted in Bollywood with Udta Punjab and impressed everyone with his work. He won the Filmfare award for Best Debut for the film which says all about his talent and dedication towards his work. It was then that the larger mass came to know him but he has been there in the entertainment industry for a really long time. Diljit is behind many of our favorite tracks and we didn't even know it was him until his acting debut in Bollywood.
Born in the Dosanjh Talan of Punjab to a Sikh family, Diljit released his first album way back in 2004 called Ishq Da Uda Ada. He released six albums till 2010 along with many singles but his breakthrough was when he entered into mainstream Punjabi Movies. He debuted through The Lion of Punjab which didn't do as well on the box office but his track Lak 28 Kudi Da from the movie was super hit which indeed became a milestone in his career. There has been no looking back since then.
Diljit appears to be a simple person, who has a fun and quirky side to him. His songs always have a desi touch to them. He has won three BritAsia Awards for his album Back to Basics. One of his very famous songs Proper Patola feature him wearing a t-shirt with Urban Pendu written on it as a tribute to the eponymous album he didn't release, and since then he is fondly addressed as Urban Pendu.
In spite of being a superstar, Diljit considers himself to be a non-actor. In his interview before the release of Udta Punjab with Anupama Chopra, he mentioned that the roles he plays are relatable to him and he can do them because he can feel the emotions of the characters. He added that if he had to play the role of a businessman, he'd not be able to do it. Diljit, as per his name, has won many hearts in his career because of his humble and down-to-earth nature.
The house of talent that Diljit is doesn't end with his work in the industry and his popularity, he is also a philanthropist. In 2013 on his birthday he launched the Saanjh Foundation, an organization that mentors the unprivileged with career development and enhancing self-confidence. He hails from a middle-class family and hence his understanding of privilege is different than many of the stars. In one of his interviews, he said: "Main gaoun ka banda hun, kahan milni thi ye sab cheezein". More success has only brought more humility to this artist.
After giving applaud worthy performances in Udta Punjab and Phillauri, Diljit is all set for his upcoming movie Soorma, whose poster released recently. But while the movie is a long way to its release the star is coming back with the Swag Fest Season 2 on 23rd of December. He is a treat to watch on screen but it is another experience to watch him live. Make sure you book your tickets for watching this powerhouse of talent live.
