Dilwale: Film Review – A Full-On Masala Entertainer

 Verdict: Miss Dilwale and weep!

If you’re a 90s kid, the names Raj – Simran and Rahul – Anjali will hold a special place in your heart. If you missed it, 2015 is here with Dilwale. The charm, the love, and the killer chemistry still manage to make you feel all warm and fuzzy inside, whether or not you’re a romantic. Dilwale belongs to Raj and Meera.

Raj (Shah Rukh Khan) has a shady past. Well, he used to be a gangster in Bulgaria, you see. His tough-as-a-bullet heart melts for a beautiful sketch artist, Meera (Kajol). He tells her honestly that he is the son of a don, and heads a criminal gang. We expect Meera to walk away, because, you know, guns and stuff. But she doesn’t. They both seem to be falling for each other, when a twist is introduced. Under really filmy, albeit unexpected, circumstances, Raj and Meera are separated for what seems like forever. 15 years later, Raj has cleaned up his act and now remodels cars with his brother Veer (Varun Dhawan). With no one else to call their own (poor daddy is no more), the brothers have a strong, beautiful bond. With little idea about his brother’s past, Veer is a happy-go-lucky chap, who falls for the pretty girl-next-door Ishita (Kriti Sanon). And as they say for every situation like this, all hell breaks loose.

You walk into the theatre expecting cars to blow up. It’s a Rohit Shetty film, after all. You are not disappointed. But there is just enough action to support the script, and nothing seems over-the-top (yes, Shetty can surprise us. Who knew?). The film is alright in the feels. The cinematographer, Dudley, has contributed greatly to making this film “look” beautiful. The music hits the spot, and does not distract you from the story. The locations are gorgeous and you might just find yourself not checking your phone even once during the movie, which is considered to be a big achievement now. The dialogues are silly at times, but they make you laugh, alright. The supporting cast is super, and they all complement each other harmoniously. Johnny LeverSanjay MishraMukesh Tiwari, and Pankaj Tripathi essay their roles honestly. Boman Irani is a pleasant surprise as the quirky Goan don.

Finally, the film belongs to Shah Rukh Khan and Kajol, hands down. Shah Rukh seems to have aged gracefully, while Kajol seems to have forgotten how to age at all. She looks absolutely stunning, especially in the first half. You get so sucked in to their romance, that you will find yourself smiling silly on several occasions. Watch out for this scene where Veer expresses his love for Ishita, and pulls the famous, SRK open-hand gesture. It is painfully cute.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

If you’re a Shah Rukh fan, we won’t even bother with a reason. But even if you aren’t, watch it for the magic the hit jodi (pardon the corny cliché) creates. The story is a little filmy, agreed. But the movie pretty much makes up for it in every other vertical. Watch it to remind yourselves that DDLJ,K3G and K2H2 are not just random assemblages of letters. They are a huge part of the history of Bollywood romances. This movie has everything a commercial entertainer must have, and then some more. Having said that, the film manages to give a lot of clichés a miss, which is quite a pleasant surprise. We recommend: do not miss this one!
