There is always a lot of excitement and buzz around the time of MAMI Film Festival in Mumbai and this year is no different. With incredible numbers of groundbreaking movies, MAMI 2017 is definitely an unforgettable one. One such groundbreaking film is Dina that won the U.S. documentary grand jury prize at Sundance.
Background and Story
Dina Buno is a 48-year-old woman who lives alone in Philadelphia. She is engaged to be married to Scott Levin who she met at a Philadelphia convention of neurologically diverse people. Scott works at Walmart and is uncomfortable with physical contact and is inexperienced in the matters of sex. Whereas Dina is someone who yearns for a physical relationship with her soon-to-be husband. She, just like any other person in a relationship, wants their partner to want them back in the same way. But Scott's refusal to give her anything more than a peck on the cheeks (which is absolutely adorable) makes Dina frustrated. Dina coaxes him to open up to the idea of physical touch that is not simply obligatory but out of wanting.
She even gifts him the book 'The Joy of Sex' which pushes him rather reluctantly to have a discussion on it with Dina, his friends, and even his parents – which is one of the most awkward situation any child could ever be in, let alone a 40-something-year-old man. So, does Dina manage to make Scott warm up to her needs and does Scott who, by the way, has a heart of gold turn into sex-machine? You will have to wait for the film to hit the big screen but will this truly deserving documentary hit theaters in India? Highly doubt it.
Why You Should Watch:
Dina is a real-life partly-scripted romantic documentary film about two people on the autism spectrum and it makes you think about sexual intimacy between mentally diverse individuals. We as "regular" humans have for long been ignorant about the needs of many individuals who are "different" than us. Dina opens your eyes and hearts. Directors Antonio Santini and Dan Sickles have done a brilliant job with Dina.
