Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha: Film Review – A Love Story Beyond Life and Death

Verdict: A love story sans the restrictions of this mortal world.

The title of the movie might remind you of the evergreen song from the movie Karz but the movie has no relevance with it whatsoever. Ek Haseena Thi Ek Deewana Tha stars Shiv Darshan of the Karle Pyaar Karle fame, introduces Natasha Fernandes and marks the return of Upen Patel with a romantic thriller.

The film starts with Lalit Mohan Tiwari and Soni Kaur (Rita) entering an old mansion which is getting renovated for the owner's daughter's wedding. Both of them set the background of the plot by discussing the story of a poor (financially) guy Devdhar (Shiv Darshan) who was murdered (55 years ago) for loving Asha, daughter of a rich man (who also owned the same mansion). Now, even after 55 years, the ghost of Devdhar is waiting for his Asha who has visited the place in the form of her granddaughter Natasha (Natasha Fernandes).

Natasha, who is to marry her childhood friend Sunny (Upen Patel) wanted this marriage to happen in this huge mansion she inherited from her mother. Here, Natasha meets Dev's spirit and falls in love with him, whereas Sunny goes back to the friendzone he was always in. This might seem like the whole story but there are many more interesting twists and miracles in this story than you can imagine.

The film has been shot in picturesque locations and that makes the actors look all the more attractive. Natasha Fernandes looks very pretty and her costume designers have done a good job. But films are not only about good looks and the actors do not score good marks in acting. Upen Patel could have expressed better and Shiv Darshan could do better if he were to hone his acting and oratory skills for his future movies.

The film has a lot of poetic dialogues for Devdhar's character, which is interesting. Maybe that is the director's reference of telling us that there's a twist that awaits. The film has an ample number of dream sequences and songs and they have been shot at beautiful locations as well. The background score is haywire and could be heard even before the scene begins.

The film has a decent storyline which has the potential to turn into an intriguing thriller but only if treated right. The screenplay of this film must have been great on paper but does not quite translate accordingly to make it a thriller it was meant to be.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:
Shiv Darshan fans need no reason. There's music, there's poetry and there are ghosts. It makes for a decent one time watch over the weekend.
