Eli: Film Review – A slow paced spy thriller!

After giving us the comedy-drama Tenali Raman, Vadivelu has once again teamed up with director Yuvaraj Dhayalan, for the film, Eli. While Tenali Raman gave us some fascinating tales about the witty court jester, Eli tells the tale of a spy. Despite its slow pace, Tenali Raman entertained us with a few good laughs, sadly Eli doesn’t quite do the same. It’s terribly slow-paced and delivers a few unsatarical scenes that might bore you. Despite of having Vadivelu’s comic timing and screen presence, this film is tiresome.
Vadivelu’s trademark antics are visible in the film. Many scenes bear his funny one-liners. The scene in which he mimic’s the popular Hindi song Mere Sapno Ki Rani will definitely crack you up. But you begin to ask yourself, do we really need a Hindi song in this film? This is one of the times in the film where the director derails from the basic plot. And this makes the film lose its continuity. The scenes are too long and too predictable – infact, the story is as if its taken from a children’s book or from one of the yesteryear films which belonged to the crime/thriller genre. The villain seems like a really chilled out guy, who has a cool attitude about everything. Pradeep Rawat plays his role with ease and doesn’t quite seem like a threat to the hero. In an effort to defend himself from his enemies, Vadivelu fights them with a ’60s style action sequence. This is quite rightly done by the director.
Why you should watch this film:
If you’re a fan of Vadivelu, and if you’ve missed watching him on the big screen, then this film is for you. Go for it if you want to watch Vadivelu and Sadah shake a leg on cabaret. It’s dreading, but you’ll enjoy it if you’re an ardent fan of Vadivelu.
