Play Review: 40 Shades of Grey (Hair)

There’s always buzz around any play that is brought to you by Ace Productions. Raell Padamsee, the owner of the company, has managed to get the biggest names in theatre to be a part of her shows. 40 Shades of Grey (Hair) has been happening for a while and in its last show this summer, hosts Cyrus Broacha and Kunal Vijaykar introduced new segments.

The name of the show is inspired by E. L. James’ bestselling novel but this one talks about the issues men face after turning forty. There’s a lot more to the show though as Cyrus randomly picked up members of the audience and challenged them. He also cracked impromptu jokes while walking down the aisles, searching for people to make fun of. While some were sporting enough to come on stage, a few simple didn't get up when their name was called.

Cyrus Broacha played himself for most of the evening while Kunal Vijayakar was seen as different characters. While in the first act he played a member of parliament who keeps slapping the cabin crew of an airline, he featured as a marathoner in the next. Both of them were hilarious with Vijaykar getting the nuances spot on. But it was his impersonation of a Mangeshkar sister that brought the house down. If you have seen the duo's TV show – The Week That Wasn't – you’ll get a sense of deja vu.

Broacha did play 'Arnab Go-swami' in the final act of the show and the jokes he cracked on the news channel 'Bepublic' left everyone in splits. He was loud, obnoxious, and absolutely crazy. The only downer was that the show was too short – 1 hour 20 minutes. You wish there were a few more acts but well, it was time to leave the auditorium. Post the show, Kunal Vijaykar and Cyrus Broacha did a meet and greet session with the audience seated in the front rows.

40 Shades of Grey (Hair) is a laugh riot that you simply shouldn't miss. The show will definitely return in a few months, so keep a tab on the events pages to get regular updates.

This blog is very well written and accurately summarises the nuances of the improv done by Cyrus and Vijay.
