Bharat Dabholkar’s “That’s My Girl” Is a New-Age Family Drama

Bharat Dabholkar is a well-known name in the Mumbai’s theatre scene. After long-running plays like Blame it on Yashraj and Bottom’s Up, the writer-director is back with a new comedy-drama, titled ‘That’s My Girl’. The play stars Ananth Mahadevan – who has previously worked with Dabholkar on his plays – model Ananya Dutta, and newcomer Shweta Rohira. After a career in journalism, Shweta is exploring acting, and she has decided to start right from the bottom. Does she manage to impress? Read on to find out.

What’s That’s My Girl About:

About 16 years after walking out on his family, Bollywood writer Anil Desai (Ananth Mahadevan) has a blast from the past. His daughter Aishwarya (Shweta Rohira) – now 19 years old – is back into his life. With a dream to become an actress in the film industry, Aishu wants to reconnect with her estranged father and also use his connections to pursue her career. She is upfront about her motives, and her struggling father has no option but to take her in and make up for the lost years. Slowly, as they rekindle their father-daughter relationship, secrets begin to spill, and Aishu’s realizes that her dream might be too far-fetched to achieve.

What Works:

Right from the start, the play manages to portray modern-day relationships in a realistic manner. Aishu is not the clichéd young girl who is bitter about her parents’ separation but also uses it to her advantage to get what she wants. Even Anil’s new relationship with a single mother working in a film industry is fairly convincing to apprehend. Bharat Dabholkar is only trying to show how modern relationships work and he gets that part right.

Ananth Mahadevan plays his part effortlessly. This is only too easy for him and he is clearly the veteran on stage, confident in his role. Meanwhile, for Ananya Dutta, it is all about portraying a character she knows too well, and she manages to impress in her scenes. She is clearly the most pragmatic character of them all and delivers her part well. It is great to see newcomers like Shweta Rohira – who is well-connected with the biggest stars of the film industry – start her career with theatre, where she can hone her craft in the right way. She has a long way to go, and we are certain we will be seeing her in more plays soon.

What Could’ve Been Better:

While we have no complaints with the script, it is evident that Ananth Mahadevan outshone the other actors on stage. This was bound to happen, given that the actor is a veteran, while the others are still gaining the confidence to perform for an audience. Nevertheless, the cast manages to impress overall.

Why You Should Watch:

Tired of watching the same old family dramas on parampara, pratistha and anushaasan? This is a refreshing comedy on new-age relationships you will easily be able to connect with.
