The Siddhus of Upper Juhu: Play Review

It’s rare to come across a play that blends comedy and drama, and even more unusual to find one that does it well. The Siddhus of Upper Juhu is the newest, most exemplary addition to this category.

The Siddhus of Upper Juhu chronicles the extraordinary adventures of an ordinary couple in the Maximum City. Balvinder "Bubbles" Siddhu (Rajit Kapur) and Behroze Siddhu (Shernaz Patel) are an ordinary (if slightly eccentric) middle-aged couple. They find themselves in a bind when their home is burgled, just a few days after Bubbles loses his job. They’ve lost everything, right from their plasma TV to their dental floss… But that’s not all. Bubbles is soon driven to a nervous breakdown, which turns out to be a blessing in disguise!

If you’ve ever lived in a big city, you’ll find yourself relating the incidents of the play to your own life. Right from the BMC drill that only seems to work at night to ads that promise a "Paris in Parel" and a "Venice in Virar"! How it manages to be so universal while being so uniquely Bambaiya, we’ll never understand. But hey, we’re not complaining!

The magnificent performances by Shernaz Patel and Rajit Kapur take this already relatable play to a whole new level. Undoubtedly two of the finest actors on the Indian theatre scene, the duo go together as well as bread and butter. They have been working together for nearly 30 years, and this shows in the comfort and chemistry they share on stage.

Director Rahul DaCunha also gets the best out of the supporting cast – Shishir Sharma, Kajli Sharma and Meera Khurana. All three actors make lasting impressions, despite their limited stage time. Shishir Sharma, in particular, stands out as Bubbles’ odd but well-intentioned brother, Goldie. Though he only has one scene with Rajit Kapur, it is certainly one of the play’s highlights.

The most underrated star of the production, however, is the set. In fact, Xheight deserves a special shout-out for the wonderful work. You will marvel at the simplicity and elegance of the set even before the play begins. But the real fun starts with the production. Yes, the set of The Siddhus of Upper Juhu manages to make the most of the theatre – even off-stage. Trust us, you’ve got to see it to believe it!

All things considered, The Siddhus of Upper Juhu is one of the finest additions to Indian theatre in a long time. The beauty with which it manages to get a point across without ever taking itself too seriously is rare. The play also has a soul to it that will leave you with a warm, fuzzy feeling long after it’s over. Moreover, not a single scene feels redundant. It is crisp, well-acted and a delight from start to finish!

But if you thought that was all, you stand corrected. Though the stage was obviously the main draw, Aadyam had a lot more to offer than just the production! Patrons also partook in a myriad of other activities; including (but not limited to) palm reading, pot the ball and ring toss!

Fortunately, we still have a lot more to look forward to. Aadyam is bringing the finest in Indian theatre to the forefront, and you can be a part of the initiative too. Just click here to book your tickets for The Siddhus of Upper Juhu, and the other stellar plays presented by Aadyam.
