Makrand Deshpande first staged his play Sir Sir Sarla in 2001, when the cast boasted of names like Anurag Kashyap and Sonali Kulkarni. Now the popular drama is back, with new actors and a fresh feel. Sanjay Dadhich and Aahana Kumra have replaced the earlier stars, while Makrand reprises the main role. The play has been made in Hindi as well as Gujarati to reach out to a wider audience in Mumbai.

What’s Sir Sir Sarla About:

The 2 hr 15 min play has been divided into two halves and explores the story of Professor Palekar (played by Deshpande) and his students. There’s Sarla (played by Kumra) – the pretty, innocent young girl who seems smitten by her mentor – and Phanidhar (played by Dadhich), who shares a love-hate relationship with the professor. The play explores the bond between the students and their professor, which faces many ups and downs throughout the course of the play. Secrets are revealed, accusations are thrown, and the three lives remain interwoven for many years to come.

What Works:

While on the outside, Sir Sir Sarla might seem like a play that depicts a common story between people, it is only when you watch it live that you realize how much you are really absorbed into the drama. Makrand Despande has a way of trapping you in his internal conflicts. His philosophies and actions might sometimes contradict, adding a human-like quality to his character of a mentor. Aahana Kumra delivers a stellar performance and it is her character that you connect most with, especially when she displays very erratic traits. Sanjay Dadhich plays possibly the most endearing part of all and you find yourself rooting for his character for a greater part of the play. His dialogue delivery coupled with his expressions steal the attention from the other two actors. The music used in the play also complements the narrative, adding to the dramatic effect.

What Could’ve Been Better:

As the story progresses, events begin to seem tedious due to the long duration of the play. This is the only hindrance to the otherwise rich and compelling narrative.

Why You Should Watch:

Sir Sir Sarla is one of Mumbai’s evergreen plays, which stages frequently all over the city. Makrand Deshpande is a prominent name in theatre and this one is absolutely a masterpiece by the veteran actor. If you love watching plays, this one is unmissable. It is a riveting blend of drama, emotions, entertainment. Don’t miss it the next time it is staging at a venue near you.
