Written by English playwright Mike Kenny, Boy with a Suitcase is an Indo-German collaboration in English that features artists from both countries. The play has completed over 120 shows across the globe and it visits Bengaluru this December.
Boy with a Suitcase follows Naz, a 12-year-old boy who hails from an oppressive land. His parents send him to London to live with his brother. He fancies himself on this voyage as Sinbad with his endless stories from his countless travels. On a journey halfway across the world, he meets Krysia, a girl on the run from a former Russian state. The two forge a friendship and survive a long treacherous journey together when forced out of their coach at gunpoint by the militia. The play gets grim when Naz’s mother enters a body smuggler’s private chamber to provide Naz can continue his journey and Krysia is forced into the flesh trade.
The play is a commentary on struggles faced by people forced to flee their country and the long, relentless journey they endure in search of a better life. A life that seems to be the only hope for survival, yet seems distant and isn’t always attained.
