The Company Theatre has been known for its hatke takes on Shakespeare's stories. Their adaptation of Twelfth Night titled Piya Behrupiya is very popular and in spite it being on Netflix, people still want to watch it live. They chose the medium of dance and song to perform the stories written centuries ago. On Friday, I made my way to Prithvi theatre to watch yet another adaptation titled Khwaab-Sa. Khwaab-Sa is an adaption of A Midsummer Night's Dream. While Piya Behrupiya was all colors, this one is a little darker and more sensual. It is not an easy task to narrate a story via just dance but they have managed to do that really well.

The story of A Midsummer Night's Dream is anything but simple. But Atul Kumar breaks it down really well for us. He only has the parts performed by the fairies and the mechanicals as dialogues and the rest of the story is performed by some excellent dancers. There are two major storylines. A group of laborers (mechanicals) are planning to perform a play for the King and the Queen's marriage and they have chosen a love story. Meanwhile, Hermia is asked to marry Demetrius and she says that she will marry no one other than Lysander. Then we meet Helena who is in love with Demetrius. Their story of love and chaos is wonderfully presented through the way of contemporary dance.

The whole cast is successful in giving the play a dream-like quality and that is not even the best part of the play. The play which is being performed by the laborers is the cherry and the icing on the cake and the cherry on top. It is utterly hilarious and you cannot help but continue laughing. That also makes you leave the theatre with a smile on your face. Abhay Mahajan as one of the laborers was an absolute delight to watch as he played the character of Nick Bottom.

If you like Shakespeare, this unique take on his story is surely worth your time. Book your tickets for their performance in NCR here.
