It’s curtains up for Indian theatre’s biggest awards. Before they’re announced, plays that have been shortlisted from hundreds of entries from around the country, will be staged in Delhi. The fifteenth edition of the Mahindra Excellence In Theatre Awards Festival, which begins on Friday, March 13, features ten plays in Hindustani, Marathi, Malayalam, Bengali, Assamese and English. The shortlist has several well-known theatre practitioners. Pune group Aasakta Kalamamch will stage Chaheta directed by Mohit Takalkar. The Hindustani drama is an examination of the Biblical story of Abraham and Isaac. Actor, writer and director Piyush Mishra from Mumbai will stage Gagan Damama Bajyo, a Hindi musical on freedom fighter Bhagat Singh. Mumbai-based director Quasar Thakore Padamsee will bring Every Brilliant Thing, his English play about a seven-year-old boy determined to cheer up his mentally ill mother.
