The next best thing to watching operas at The Metropolitan Opera in New York, is surely watching a quality screening of the productions. The NCPA has since 2012 run Met Live, a series of high-definition live broadcasts of operas playing at the MET. Here’s the line-up of screenings in 2019 and 2020.

‘Manon’

French composer Jules Massenet’s Manon is a cautionary tale of greed. It tells of young Manon, who chooses a life of luxury and riches over true love and pays the price for it. Performed it French, the opera has English subtitles.

‘Madama Butterfly’

Giacomo Puccini’s Madama Butterfly recounts the tale of a Japanese girl’s ill-fated love for an American navy lieutenant. Love and heartbreak are at the heart of this Italian opera that is based on the short story, Madame Butterfly by American author John Luther Long. Performed in Italian with English subtitles.

‘Akhnaten’

Akhnaten (pictured above) is a three-act opera on the life and religious ideologies of the Egyptian pharaoh Amenhotep IV. Written by Oscar-nominated composer Phillip Glass, it begins with his coronation and ends with his death and the succession of his son Tutankhamun. Performed in several languages with English subtitles.

‘Wozzeck’

The first opera composed by Austrian composer Alban Berg, it’s based on the unfinished play, Woyzeck by German playwright, Georg Buchner. Wozzeck is considered one of the most famous works that employs atonality, music that avoids establishing a key. The plot revolves around the soldier Wozzeck and his fellow townspeople living in a rural German-speaking town. Performed in German with English subtitles.

‘Porgy and Bess’

George Gershwin’s Porgy and Bess is an English opera based on DuBose Heyward’s 1925 novel, Porgy. The composer, in a New York Times article, called the opera a “folk opera” likening Porgy and Bess to a folk tale. Set in the fictional Catfish Row in Charleston, it is the story of a disabled beggar, Porgy and his attempts to free his true love, Bess, from the clutches of her drug dealer. Performed in English with English subtitles.

‘Agrippina’

Composed for the Venice Carnevale by George Frideric Handel, this Italian opera debuted in Venice in 1709. It tells the tale of Agrippina, the mother of Roman emperor Nero and her ambitious plans for him. Ripe with political machinations, the story details how Agrippina plots the downfall of her husband, Claudius, to ensure Nero takes the throne. Performed in Italian with English subtitles.

‘Der Fliegende Hollander’ (The Flying Dutchman)

Richard Wagner’s Der Fliegende Hollander is the story of attaining redemption through selfless love. Set in Norway, the story narrates the fate of the Flying Dutchman, cursed by god to roam the sea forever as a spectral being for having invoked Satan. His only salvation is to be cast upon the shore once every seven years; if he can find a wife who loves him truly, the curse will be broken. Performed in German with English subtitles.
When: Tuesday, April 21 at 6pm.

‘Tosca’

Hailed as one of opera’s greatest thrillers, Giacomo Puccini’s Tosca is based on Victorien Sardou’s French play, La Tosca, a political thriller set in eighteenth century Rome. The plot centres on three main characters, Floria Tosca, her lover Mario Cavaradossi and corrupt police chief, Baron Scarpia. When Cavaradossi is captured by Scarpia (who has long lusted after Tosca), she has to decide whether to give in to the police chief’s advances or allow her lover to die. Performed in Italian with English subtitles.

‘Maria Stuarda’

A tragic Italian opera by composer Gaetano Donizetti, Maria Stuarda is based on Friedrich Schiller’s play, Maria Stuart. The story is loosely based on the lives of Mary, Queen of Scots and her cousin, Queen Elizabeth I. The drama is a fictional meeting of the two queens.
