In this edition of the Delhi Theatre Festival, watch popular dramas in English and Hindi by top thespians such as Pankaj Kapoor and Naseeruddin Shah.

‘Dreamz – Sehar’

Directed by Pankaj Kapur, this Hindi play tells the story of Professor Sanjeev Mishra, who meets a mysterious woman named Sehar on a trip to Kasauli. As he is drawn closer to this woman, he experiences a series of events that blur the lines between dreams and reality.
When: Friday, August 30 at 8pm.

‘Dopehri’

Pankaj Kapur will perform a dramatic reading of his Hindi novella of the same. Set in old Lucknow, it’s a portrait of Amma Bi, a lonely, aging woman living in a haveli.

‘White Rabbit Red Rabbit’

An absurdist play that straddles the line between comedy and drama, White Rabbit Red Rabbit, originally written by Nassim Soleimanpour, has been performed in over 25 different languages worldwide. As a conscientious objector who declined to perform military service, Soleimanpour was not allowed to leave his native Iran. He turned his frustration into a play in English that needs no director or set and is performed by a different actor every performance. Actors are handed the script before every performance, which means they’re unrehearsed.

‘Gardish Mein Taare’

Director Saif Hyder Hasan’s musical play in Hindi is loosely based on the lives of filmmaker Guru Dutt and his singer wife Geeta Dutt. The drama is centred on the relationship of a 1950s married couple, Dev Dutt, a celebrated filmmaker, and Bhavna, a playback singer who sings in her husband’s films.

‘Einstein’

Naseeruddin Shah directs and performs in this solo English drama written by German-Jewish writer Gabriel Emmanuel. Shah plays an ageing Einstein, who is filled with guilt and horror that his research is being used to create the atom bomb.
When: Friday August 31 at 8pm at Orana Conventions and Sunday, September 1 at 8pm at Sirifort Auditorium.

‘Nothing Like Lear’

Vinay Pathak playing a clown delivers a monologue on the loneliness of old age and the pain he feels on being abandoned by his daughter in director Rajat Kapoor’s English adaptation of Shakespeare’s King Lear.
