The relationship between cinema and theatre has always been a give-and-take one. Early movies were inspired by their theatrical counterparts and rarely have we seen theatrical productions being inspired from movies. In 2016, after 56 years of its release, we saw what could be said is a tribute to Mughal-E-Azam. The movie that is an integral part of our cinematic history was then adapted as a musical for the stage. Directed by Feroz Abbas Khan, Mughal-E-Azam opened to houseful shows and amazing reviews that year. From the setting to the costumes, everything about the musical was simply magical. The songs that we have been crooning since years were presented in a new avatar, with new compositions, and there were no complaints.
The musical became so popular among Mumbaikars that a second run of the shows was requested, where people who had seen it the first time still went ahead and saw it again. Yet, there are many who had missed seeing this classic on stage and for them, Mughal-E-Azam was back in June. With costumes by Manish Malhotra and a set that will transport you back in time, this was certainly a theatrical experience for all kinds of audiences. The cast had been trained by Broadway experts, making this a path-breaking production for Indian theatre.
After a series of successful runs at NCPA in Mumbai, Mughal-E-Azam then went to Delhi and was later performed in different parts of the world, receiving raving reviews everywhere it went. Now, after more than 150 sold-out shows and mesmerizing over 1.5 lakh people worldwide, Mughal-E-Azam is back in Delhi. For all the Delhiites who thought that they missed an experience of a lifetime, you can witness this magical and mesmerizing production live on stage once again. So hurry up and book your tickets before they sell out.
