In Blade Runner, we were introduced to a dystopian futuristic society set in 2019. Genetically engineered replicants who are just like humans are sent to work in colonies in a different world. The replicants who escape to Earth are then hunted down by the special police force of Blade Runners. Harrison Ford was the lead in the last film, where he played Rick Reckard. Now 30 years later, the new LAPD officer, K (Ryan Gosling) is off to find the ex-Blade Runner who had gone missing.
While the first film was made by Ridley Scott who's given us countless sci-fi marvels over the years, the new film is directed by Denis Villeneuve, who is a new but an impressive addition to the genre, with his previous direction being Arrival. Villeneuve has also worked before with Ryan Gosling on Drive, which happens to be another visually stunning film. The role of K was written just for Gosling as Villeneuve wanted only him to have the part.
Gosling and Ford aren't the only impressive cast members of Blade Runner 2049. Robin Wright (Diana's mentor from Wonder Woman) will be playing K's boss, Lieutenant Joshi. Jared Leto (Suicide Squad and Dallas Buyer's Club) plays a mysterious inventor who builds a new type of replicants. Dave Bautista (Guardians of the Galaxy) is also a part of the film, playing the role of a replicant.
Blade Runner didn't do well in its first run but built up a large fan following over the years. Now, Blade Runner 2049 is possibly going to change that. With only a few glimpses of the film from the trailers and very little known about the plot, it's one of the most awaited releases of the year.
