In 1892, a legendary army captain, Joseph Blocker (Christian Bale) reluctantly agrees to escort a dying Native American Cheyenne war chief Yellow Hawk (Wes Studi) and his family to their native land in Montana. Along the way, they come across Rosalie Quaid (Rosamund Pike) in her burned-out home where her husband and children have been killed by the ruthless Comanche tribe. Now, in addition to the danger from fur traders, they also have to look out for the Comanche, who do not discriminate between killing white people and other native tribes.

This is Scott Cooper's fourth film as a director. His last one, Black Mass, was a crime biopic starring Johnny Depp and Benedict Cumberbatch. He's also worked with Christian Bale before for another crime drama, the 2013 film, Out of the Furnace. This is also Bale's second western, with the first being 3:10 To Yuma. Cooper specifically wrote the characters of  Christian Bale, Wes Studi, Jesse Plemons, Rory Cochrane, Q'orianka Kilcher, Adam Beach, Stephen Lang and Bill Camp for the actors. In fact, the only actor who had to audition for his role was Timothée Chalamet, who has been recently nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor for Call Me By Your Name. He isn't the only Oscar nominee in the cast; Rosamund Pike, who plays Rosalie, had also been nominated for the 2015 film Gone Girl. Even Christian Bale has been nominated for Best Actor and Best Supporting Actor and won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor for The Fighter

If the plot and the cast aren't enough to intrigue you, Hostiles also has some great cinematography. Most of the film takes place outdoors in New Mexico and Arizona. From the trailer, it's clear that it won't be just another Western action flick that's pro-American. It will show the atrocities of war committed by both the American soldiers and the Native Americans.
