Background & Story
Four time National Award winning director Madhur Bhandarkar returns to the silver screen after a brief gap of two years since his last venture Calendar Girls released in 2015. The director is known for making films based on crucial social issues. Traffic Signal, Page 3, Fashion, Chandni Bar – name any Madhur Bhandarkar film and you are sure to find burning social issues underlining all his films.
His next project titled Indu Sarkar is a controversial film that will take us back to a significant era in the Indian democracy. The 21-month long Emergency in 1975, which snatched people’s right to freedom of expression away and curtailed all civil liberties overnight, is an episode that has been a dark spot on India’s history.
Madhur Bhandarkar wants to depict the horrors of Emergency so that today’s generation understands the importance of democracy. The director has put a lot of effort in recreating Delhi of the 70s and every element on the screen will cry out the terror of that period. At the forefront is a fictional character played by the Pink actor Kirti Kulhari, who rises against the tyrannical Government and faces all odds to fight the system. Neil Nitin Mukesh will play Sanjay Gandhi’s whereas Supriya Vinod will essay the powerful Prime Minister Indira Gandhi’s role.
The film is said to be a mixture of 70% fiction and 30% reality, thus increasing our curiosity about Mr. Bhandarkar’s use of his creative liberty. Amidst the many masala Bollywood films, directors have time and again tried to portray stories about real people and real events. Indu Sarkar, based on such an integral slice of Indian history, will definitely take you back to the times we would never wish to revisit.
Indu Sarkar will release on July 28th in your nearest theatres. Book your tickets in advance and do not forget to read the BMS review of Indu Sarkar.
