F1 2013: The Story So Far

March 17th, 2013
After Vettel started from where he left off in 2012 at pole position, it was the Finn that crawled up from 7th to 1st in the race, starting off the season in fine style. In 2012, Raikkonen lacked the pace to win a race, and here he was at Melbourne Park- leading the world championship for the first time since his victory in 2007 with Ferrari. Alonso finished second, followed by Vettel- who was disappointed after dominating qualifying on the weekend.

This time, no mistakes for Vettel. He started on pole and led almost every lap of the race, until he was faced with a stiff challenge from his own teammate Webber in the end. He held on, capping a perfect weekend with a Red Bull 1-2, after Alonso crashed out in the second lap.

Mercedes’ first of many pole positions this season. But Hamilton couldn’t convert it into race form. Alonso made amends for Sepang and won his first race of the season, and his 31st of his career. He closed in to 9 points of Vettel- the leader- while Raikkonen continued his podium form in 2nd.

Another Mercedes on pole, this time Rosberg. Raikkonen finished on the podium (2nd) for the third time in 4 races, and this consistency would have taken him to the top in any era but…it was Vettel that stood tall again. He took the checkered flag by a healthy 9 seconds, with Alonso finishing a disappointing 8th.

Rosberg continued his impressive qualifying form with his second consecutive pole, but could only finished 6th. Alonso won his home Grand Prix, followed by Raikkonen once again. Vettel finished 4th.

June 9th, 2013
Vettel broke the run of Mercedes poles with his 3rd pole position of the season, and his 3rd win of the season. He was followed by a limping Alonso in 2nd, who managed to hold off a charging Hamilton- who was about to start his own purple qualifying patch.

June 30th, 2013
It was an all Mercedes weekend, with Hamilton’s second pole position of the season, and Rosberg’s second win of an inconsistent season. It was also the weekend the famous Pirelli breakdown occurred, with 4 different incidents. Rosberg drove a brave race to hold off a charging Red Bull, but it wasn’t Vettel. The German had retired earlier with a gearbox problem, and his contenders Alonso and Raikkonen couldn’t take full advantage finishing 3rd and 5th respectively.

July 7th, 2013

No surprise, Raikkonen finished second AGAIN.
