Imtiaz Ali’s much-awaited seventh feature film, Jab Harry Met Sejal, releases on August 4. This is his first film after the Ranbir Kapoor–Deepika Padukone–starrer Tamaasha, back in November 2015.
Jab Harry Met Sejal stars Shah Rukh Khan (Khan’s first collaboration with the storied director) and Anushka Sharma (her first with Ali, too). This is the actors’ second Hindi film of the year – Khan’s second after Raees, and Sharma’s second after Phillauri. The film spans across Europe and a little of North India.
The story is evident from the Jab Harry Met Sejal trailer. Harry, an Indian-origin Jatt tour guide in Europe decides to help Sejal, an engaged Gujarati girl search across cities for the lost ring her fiancé gave her. Harry is a wanderer and ladies’ man and has probably never had a serious relationship in his life. Sejal is the polar opposite – on the cusp of marriage, conventional and looking for the only symbol she believes in. Their journey together results in a romance without them realizing it, and their personalities changing on a sojourn across Europe’s prettiest locations. Trouble brings them closer and they become more self-aware as the film progresses. The final act seems to be based in Punjab and maybe another part of India – because home is where the hearts often meet.
With many sexual undertones in the film, watch Shah Rukh Khan's comments on romance and sex here:
Imtiaz Ali is one of the few ‘star’ Hindi film directors – a celebrity in his own right. He experiments with his narratives and voice far more than most mainstream filmmakers, to communicate a ‘mood’ of this generation. Right from his debut with Socha Na Tha (Abhay Deol and Ayesha Takia’s debut) to the Alia Bhatt–starrer Highway, there has not been a film of Ali’s that hasn’t been discussed or dissected with great fervor. His work remains fascinating for an entire generation looking to relate to his perception of love, heartbreak, and ambition.
This is Khan and Sharma’s third collaboration as a pair together – after Anushka’s 2007 debut, Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi, and Yash Chopra’s final film, Jab Tak Hai Jaan.
Heroine Of The Hour
Sharma is perhaps one of the rare contemporary actresses to have worked with all the three Khans (PK, Sultan) as well as Ranbir Kapoor (Bombay Velvet, Ae Dil Hai Mushkil) and Ranveer Singh (Band Baaja Baarat, Ladies vs Ricky Behl, Dil Dhadakne Do).
She has also worked with all the top Bollywood directors: Rajkumar Hirani, Vishal Bhardwaj, Zoya Akhtar, Maneesh Sharma, Anurag Kashyap, Aditya Chopra, Karan Johar and now Imtiaz Ali. She is doing an Anand L. Rai film soon with SRK and Katrina, as well as Rajkumar Hirani’s Sanjay Dutt biopic next.
Jab Harry Met Sejal is expected to take the biggest box-office opening of Imtiaz Ali’s career so far. Post the weekend though, it will all depend on the reviews, word-of-mouth and the leads’ ability to attract their fans to cinema halls in a week with no real competition. The release of Shanker Raman’s indie film, Gurgaon, is the only competition this film may have.
