Half Girlfriend: Film Review – Half Entertaining

Verdict: Shraddha-Arjun's lovestory seems too unrealistic for today's time.

Chetan Bhagat may not be trending for all the right reasons every time but his books are something every director wants to make a movie on. And why not? From what we've seen in the past, be it Kai Po Che, 3 Idiots or Two States, all have not just worked but worked well enough to be critically and commercially acclaimed. Unfortunately, with the release of Half Girlfriend, we have understood, not every book needs to be turned into a movie.

Directed by Mohit Suri, starring Shraddha Kapoor and Arjun Kapoor in the lead as Riya Somani and Madhav Jha, Half Girlfriend is a love story of a rich girl and a Bihari boy who fall in (unrealistic) love but are separated due to circumstances, distance and also because it is a wrong time in their lives. With an ordinary plot, there isn't any unusual outcome one can expect from this movie. The movie does not leave an impact and horribly fails to connect to the audience.

The story starts with the Madhav and Riya getting admission in the same college. Both are basketball champs and become friends on the court and their love story takes off from there. Riya, who is dealing with family issues, doesn't want to commit but agrees to be Madhav's half girlfriend and a naive and innocent Madhav, influenced by his friends tries to take things forward in the room which leads to their full break up. Next thing you know, 19-year-old Riya is getting married leaving Madhav alone in college for the next two years.

It seemed fate had different plans for them when years later, the two cross paths once again in Patna, where Madhav has gone to attend a Bill Gates seminar in order to get a grant for his school and Riya is on a business trip. Circumstances separate the so-called lovebirds once again but our lover boy, Madhav, isn't ready to give up this time, and so the chase for the half girlfriend begins.

The movie, despite having a good story line, lacked a realistic touch where Madhav does not have time to learn a language in so many years but he totally has time to follow Riya to New York. Also, he convinces everyone from Bill Gates to restaurant guards at New York by speaking Hindi. How? Because it's 'Dil Ki Bhasha'.

What we really liked about the movie was Shraddha and Arjun's sizzling chemistry. We already mentioned how much we have loved Shraddha's look all through the movie and of course, the songs deserve a mention for being the saving grace of the film. Vikrant Massey and Rhea Chakraborty were pleasant surprises. Seema Biswas, who plays Arjun's mother, has done a praise-worthy job.

Why You Should Watch This Movie:

If you're someone who likes drama, glamor, and love stories, this movie can totally be something to look forward to. Yes, it may not make sense entirely but it's not bad for a one-time watch.

If you are impressed with Shraddha Kapoor's style in the film too, watch the video below as we decode her stylish looks for you.
