Fred and George Weasley are undoubtedly one of the favorite duos of the Harry Potter series. They were funny, brave, and super fun. Right from the first book, they have entertained us with their witty comments and crazy inventions. Throughout the series, the presence of the twins meant comic relief. Then, in the seventh book, J. K. Rowling committed the heinous act of killing one of them. We could never forgive her for doing this to us, and continue to curse her till this day.
The actors who played Fred and George – James and Oliver Phelps – turn 31 today! In celebration, we bring you the best Fred and George moments from the entire series. Here’s to reliving the good times:
Warning: If you haven’t read the Harry Potter series, chances are you may not have heard of most of these instances. If you haven’t even heard of the movies, you were either born yesterday, or live under the proverbial rock.
When they threw snowballs at Voldemort’s face
While this wasn’t shown in the movie, it probably is one of the best moments of the series. In Harry’s first year, when Quirrell was the professor, Fred and George played a prank on him by bewitching snowballs to hit the back of his turban. Only, they had no idea what lay beneath. Those who have seen the movie or read the book know that it was none other than Lord Voldemort himself.
When they rescued Harry from the Dursleys
In the second book/movie, Harry is locked up in his room by the Dursleys after Dobby’s nasty trick. Meanwhile, after receiving no replies to his letters all summer, Ron decides to go to Privet Drive himself, to check if Harry is okay. Accompanying him were Fred and George, who drove their father’s flying Ford Anglia halfway across London at just 14 years of age.
When they gave Harry the Marauder's Map
In their first year of Hogwarts, Fred and George were reprimanded by Filch, the caretaker, for causing mischief. In his office, they find the confiscated Marauder’s Map, which was originally created by Sirius, Lupin, Pettigrew, and James Potter himself. The twins nick the map, and in Harry’s third year, hand it over to him, realizing that his need for the map was greater than theirs.
When they started Weasleys’ Wizarding Wheezes
It was during the summer before The Goblet of Fire that the twins come up with the idea of starting a joke shop. They make a lot of fun things, including Ton-Tongue Toffees, Puking Pastilles, fake wands and more. When they pick Harry up from Privet Drive that summer, Fred accidentally lets the toffees loose in front of Dudley, who eats one leading to a major incident.
When they predicted the outcome of the Quidditch World Cup
“Ireland wins – but Victor Krum gets the snitch.” No one believed this insane prediction would come true, not even the gambler, Ludo Bagman himself. But when that indeed was the result of the Quidditch World Cup, Fred and George were the real winners. Ludo Bagman had to cough up the money, which he didn’t, but the twins got what they deserved anyway.
When they tried to hoodwink the Goblet of Fire
Dumbledore has warned the students that fooling the Goblet of Fire would be impossible. But Fred and George were not going to back off without even trying. They took a couple of swigs of the Aging Potion and tried to register themselves for the Triwizard Tournament. However, as Dumbledore had warned, their efforts failed, and they ended up growing long white beards.
When they left Hogwarts in style
The twins’ final year at Hogwarts was undoubtedly their best. Once Dumbledore was gone from the school, the two unleashed hell on Dolores Umbridge. They let loose fireworks, which wouldn’t stop for days, and even got Peeves, the poltergeist, to back them. They created a ruckus in the Great Hall, when they finally left Hogwarts in the best fashion ever.
When they opened the best store in Diagon Alley
After the twins left Hogwarts, they did what they were born to do – open a joke shop. During a very dark and difficult time in the wizarding world, Fred and George brought joy and cheer into Diagon Alley with their shop, Weasleys' Wizard Wheezes. It had all kinds of fun stuff, from love potions to Extendable Ears, to Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder.
