Frightening Humans from Horror Flicks

“That cold ain’t the weather, that’s death approaching.”30 Days of Night (2007)

In the world of horror, monsters, ghosts, aliens and zombies are out to get us, while we as a species fight them off valiantly or succumb to our bloody fate. Blood, gore and death are the most common themes to expect in these films. The monster kills because that’s all it knows to do due to his nature. Movies that have murderous supernatural elements are easier to accept because somewhere deep in our minds, we know this isn’t real. But when humans turn out to be the crazy drooling monsters of the film, that’s when our fears multiply. Monsters are predictable, they have patterns, habits and motivations. For e.g., you know that a dead spirit won’t try eat you and that a vampire won’t posses you. But humans, they are the unpredictable lot. There’s no way to know where they will go, what or who they will kill next. This is what makes them the worst kind of monsters. Here are a bunch of creepy films which had creepy humans as the monster (obviously, there will be tons of spoilers ahead).

Any list would be incomplete without the mention of this masterpiece. As we see the last scene of Norman’s smiling face, we couldn’t help but whether his mental illness was a true manifestation of evil.

The Hills Have Eyes

They begin as a peculiar natural phenomenon, only to end as gruesome flesh eating humans, disfigured by circumstances. Even looking at the face (almost) of those weird human things gives us the creeps.

House of wax

A classic college trip with a bunch of annoying kids. We know who will die first (we are looking at you Hilton). But what we didn’t know was the lengths people (read: freaks) would go to create realistic wax statues.

The Orphan

It has an adopted little Russian girl with an accent that actually contributes to the creepiness. She lies, kills, and stabs yet finishing her greens at dinner. She is the epitome of innocence and evil. Oh also, a middle-aged lady.

P2

A decent-looking desperate guy, lulls you in with a false sense of security. Then all hell breaks loose. If you haven’t cultivated a mortal fear of underground parking lots after watching this movie, you cannot be human.

The Strangers
New Bitmap Image (5)
A home invasion of the extreme kind leaves us scared of our own house. The movie would have been a lot less scary if the villains weren’t humans. It also has a chilling dialogue at the end:
Poor tied up homeowner on the brink of death: “Why are you doing this to us?”
Invaders: “Because you were home.”
