Spoof movies are parodies of films. Hate the original? Watch its spoof! It makes for a better and fun watch. If you like comedy, especially satire, you may enjoy watching spoof movies. Especially when they make fun of big franchises. Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings, Hunger Games, Twilight, 50 Shades of Grey, and many other big franchises have parodies made after them. The infamous Scary Movie series is a spoof of popular horror films.
While spoof movies have existed for a long time, lately there has been a steady decline in their quality. Parodies these days are hardly funny, and no one is laughing at piss and poop jokes anymore. Take 50 Shades of Black, which was a parody on the famous 50 Shades movies. The movie earned an average rating of 2.8/10 on Rotten Tomatoes, and was slammed by critics and viewers. The Hungover Games – a parody of The Hangover and The Hunger Games – did not fare too well either. In fact, most popular spoof movies are turning out to be really bad these days.
If you do want to watch some good parodies, you may want to pick from this list:
Robin Hood: Men in Tights
This musical comedy was a parody of the Robin Hood story, particularly Prince of Thieves. It was directed by Mel Brooks, who also played a small role in the film. While critics gave the movie mixed reviews, it was well appreciated by the audience and was a commercial success.
Meet the Spartans
This hilarious comedy spoofed the Gerard Butler-starrer 300. It was created by Jason Friedberg and Aaron Seltzer, who also directed Epic Movie, Date Movie and the Scary Movie series. Needless to say, this was one of their better efforts, and also managed to get plenty of laughs.
Hated Twilight and New Moon? Then you have got to watch this hilarious parody. It makes fun of vampires, werewolves, and insecure teenage girls who obsess over vampires and werewolves. Neither Team Edward nor Team Jacob can win this one!
Shaun of the Dead
This apocalyptic zombie comedy spoofs every zombie movie that was ever made. Some of the tactics used to “civilize” the walking dead can put Rick and his group to shame. This film was not only appreciated by critics, it even went on to become a commercial hit.
This was a spoof series on spy movies. There are three films: Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me, and Austin Powers in Goldmember. Each movie is funnier than its prequel. Need another reason to watch? Beyoncé stars in one of them!
The Exorcist is a lot easier to watch once you have watched its parody. Partly because a lot of scary bits from film are ridiculed, and also because Linda Blair from the original movies plays the possessed child in the spoof as well. Even if the story does not appeal, its music will get you pumping.
Not Another Teen Movie
If you are not a fan of the ‘90s teen dramas, this is the movie to watch. It takes a dig at several rom-coms like 10 Things I Hate About You, Can't Hardly Wait, She's All That, Never Been Kissed, Sixteen Candles, The Breakfast Club and more. Never will a teen movie feel like a drag again.
All three films in this series was a spoof of the television series Police Squad! While the TV series was cancelled only after six episodes, their parodies went on to perform well in the box office. The movies also got positive reviews from viewers and critics.
This movie stars Charlie Sheen and Jon Cryer – the original cast members of Two and a Half Men. Don’t mistake this for the 1956 film of the same name. The spoof of Top Gun was created in 1991, with its sequel, Hot Shots! Part Deux, in 1993.
This disaster film of 1980 parodies Zero Hour! and Airport 1975. In one of its scenes, the film recreates John Travolta’s iconic dance scene from the film Saturday Night Fever. It is one of the few spoof movies to get a Golden Globe nomination.
