G.I. Joe: Retaliation: Movie Review

Review: The second installment of the G.I. Joe series is quintessential Hollywood entertainment. The first part, G. I. Joe: The Rise of Cobra (2009) was an entertaining film which subsequently became a big hit of that season. Though the reviews weren’t favorable but still the film managed to become the 5th highest grossing Hasbro (American multinational toy & board game company) movie of all time. Now with G.I. Joe: Retaliation, the franchise has once again come up with an action-packed adventure which the audience will enjoy, provided the expectations aren’t high. Commendable is the way toy characters (G.I. Joe) are successfully adapted into film language and the audience has previously enjoyed it knowing that this is sheer entertainment, not a social commentary on world affairs.

The script is better this time since it touches the issues of brotherhood, loyalty & nuclear threat efficiently finding much of its inspiration from the cartoon series, G.I. Joe: A Real American Hero with the direction being moderately successful in bringing it to the big screen. The action sequences are really nice and the ‘mountain fight’ sequence in the second half is exceptionally well-shot. Albeit there will be a sizable chunk of audience who won’t like this offering if they are accustomed to watching better cinematic works.

On the other hand, if one goes expecting the flavor of action-packed big budget flicks, they will enjoy it. The craft in various departments is above average showing a lot of potential for improvement at the same time. If only the script would have been integrated with enhanced resolution and also the director would have allowed the possibility of taking the 2nd part a level higher, the results would have been better. The inconsistency in creating an emotionally-woven action movie (editing is part good & logically inconsistent at times) is something one can feel even while watching the film. Jonathan Pryce as the American president tends to send a chill down one’s spine. Also, some of the film’s final sequences are amazing; thanks to the intelligent use of special effects. However, the background music tries hard to compete with the pace and manages to end up as just another eclectic score. Although it can’t be denied that sometimes the film becomes unintentionally funny, this is nonetheless the G.I. Joe world and everybody is invited to get entertained.
