Game Night: Film Review – A Comedy That Will Win You Over

Verdict: A mix of brilliant acting, great direction, and a tight script.

Directed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein (writers of Horrible Bosses and Horrible Bosses 2) Game Night is a comedy about a game night that features sibling rivalry, car chases, guns, and even a dog who gets unwittingly covered in blood.

What's Game Night About:

Max (Jason Bateman) and Annie (Rachel McAdams) are a married couple who hosts regular game nights at their house to have a fun evening with their friends who include a couple who has been together since they were teenagers (Lamorne Morris and Kylie Bunbury) and a handsome yet occasionally dense guy, Ryan (Billy Magnussen), who gets a new girlfriend along each time. Their neighbor, Gary (Jesse Plemons), used to be a part of their game night too until he got divorced and became weird.

Max's brother, Brooks (Kyle Chandler) comes into town and shows off with his own version of Game Night – a murder mystery with professional actors who will make it seem all real. However, things go wrong when a group of actual criminals gets involved in a night that becomes crazier as it goes along.

What Works:

Game Night makes an excellent diversion from regular comedies about a night gone wrong (Rough Night, Date Night) by not being afraid to embrace the thriller genre while being comfortable with being a comedy. The score and the cinematography are straight out of a thriller. Most notably, there are aerial shots which make the cars and the houses seem like pieces on a board game. This isn't just another cheap comedy – the quality makes it clear that a lot of care has gone into making sure all the pieces of the movie fit together.

On the acting front, even though Jason Bateman plays his usual straight guy role, he does it so well it's hard to not enjoy seeing him in wacky situations. Rachel McAdams, who makes the other half of the lead couple, also shows her comedic skills in this movie. Almost all the actors get their moments in Game Night, but Jesse Plemons stands out by making him seem like someone you feel sorry for even as you feel a bit creeped out by him. Game Night has a few excellent cameos that includes one of the directors, Chelsea Peretti (Gina on Brooklyn Nine-Nine), and Michael C. Hall (Dexter from Dexter).

What Could Have Been Better:

Game Night relies a bit too much for its comedy on long drawn out scenes which may get tiresome after a while. Although it does rely on twists, Game Night could have been benefited from having a few clues along the way for the audience to have a more rewarding watch.

Why You Should Watch:

Game Night is a fun watch for a night out at the theatres and certainly as fun as any game night you could have with your friends. It will keep you guessing with its many twists while keeping it light-hearted with its hilarious moments.

P. S. Make sure you stay through the credits to find out how the game night was made.
