Ghulam Ali: Maestro’s Masterpieces defining a Film’s Theme

Ghulam Ali, a world renowned and a revered Ghazal singer from Pakistan, took to singing at the age of nine and since then, the stage became an abode for his talent. Although mistaken for Bade Ghulam Ali Khan Saab, Maestro Ghulam Ali gets his name after his mentor. Ghulam Ali who picks up from the Ghazals of renowned yesteryears’ Shayars, blends words well with Hindustani Classical and Gharana Gayaki which makes him a favored Ghazal singer in India, Pakistan and the countries neighboring. Ali’s association with Indian Ghazal Samrat – Jagjit Singh, was highly acclaimed. When one browses YouTube for the Maestro’s singing pieces, all one finds is the music from his concerts.

Ghulam Ali, though, has hardly lent his voice to Bollywood, the few of his Ghazals that made it to the big screen have remained Indian audiences’ all time favorite. However, being a die-hard Ghazal fan, one would wish that there was more of Ghulam Ali saab’s Ghazals integrated with films. Nonetheless, we bring a few of Mastero’s masterpieces that could define the theme of the film.

Jab Tassavur Mera Chupke Se

The words, “Jab Tasaavur Mera Chupke Se Tujhe Chuu Aaye; Apni Har Sans Se Mujhko Teri Khushbu Aaye”, of the Ghazal simply reminds one of the films “Aiyyaa” in which Meenakshi (Rani Mukherjee) is attracted to a boy because of his intoxicating “Gandha” or aroma. Sachin Kundalkar’s venture is presented in a funny way. However, the film is an adaptation of a serious Marathi film “Gandha” directed by same director and based on the same theme. Geling this ghazal with the film would have definitely garnered more applause for the film.

Hungama Kyon Hai Barpa

An established singer ruins his life and career to alcohol addiction later crosses path with a damsel in distress and falls for this lovely damsel who is an aspiring singer. He hears her mellow voice and sets takes up a challenge to make love of his life India’s leading female singer. He wins this challenge hands down but loses himself to alcohol. On hearing the story of this lauded 2013 blockbuster hit “Aashiqui 2” one definitely feels that Bhatts’ did a very good job with the sequel, but what they missed is a song which matched the feelings of the male lead. And in our view what they needed was Ghulam Ali’s dose of “Hungama Hai Kyon Barpa, Thodi Si Jo Pii Lii Hai; Daakaa Toh Nahin Daalaa Chori Toh Nahi Kii Hai…”

Mehfil Main Baar Baar

Agha Bismil’s words woven into melody by Ghulam Ali is a ghazal that is well-liked. However, seaming the same into the film would have been an added advantage to the film. Since Alfaz speak of Mehfil, beautiful sets of Sanjay Leela Bhansali’s Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam could have done good using this ghazal. If “Albela” became a popular track, “Mehfil” would have uped the popularity for sure.

Humko Kisi Ke Gham Ne Mara

Hum ko kis ke gham ne mara,

Yeh kahani phir sahi…

Kis ne toda dil humara,

Yeh kahani phir sahi…

These words bring back the image of a heartbroken lover from the state of Rasgullas. However, sweet the state might be yet, the story was painful enough that it is remembered even decades later. Be it Devdas starring Dilip Kumar, Devdas starring SRK or a mod version; DevD, this ghazal is situationaly a perfect fit!

Chupke Chupke Raat Din

The love that emerges from this ghazal of Ghulam Ali Saab is evident in the Aankh mein choli that goes on between two young hearts seen in a 1975 Rom-com; Choti Si Baat, that starred Amol Palekar and Vidya Sinha. Being one of Ghulam Ali’s well-received Ghazal, it was used in B.R.Chopra’s Nikaah.
