We have moved from VCRs to DVDs, walkmans to iPods, audio cassettes to pendrives and Britney Spears to Lady Gaga. It’s been over two decades since the 1990s, and we miss so much about the era. Probably one thing we miss the most is the 90’s music. The 90s gave us love-drenched tunes, alternative rock odes, sultry tones of R&B pieces and foot-tapping numbers. Now, don’t we all remember dancing to the Macarena song? It would be rather exciting to revisit pop bands from the period that made us want to turn our boombox on.
Think of Aqua, and their Billboard-hitting single Barbie Girl automatically plays in your head. Having sold over 33 million albums and singles around the globe, Aqua is the most successful Danish Band ever. My oh my! Apparently, the band was originally called Joy Speed and got the name Aqua from a poster.
Fun Fact: Lene’s famous bird tattoo was fake.
Best known for Boom, Boom, Boom, Boom!, the Vengaboys have sold over 25 million records worldwide. In 2001, the Dutch Eurodance band was the recipient of the World Music Award for best-selling dance group of the year. Remember the time when you sang "We’re going to eat Pizza!", when in fact Vengaboys were actually singing about "Going to Ibiza"?!
Fun Fact : The song is actually a reworking of Typically Tropical’s 1975 hit Barbados.
3. SPICE GIRLS
Signed to Virgin Records, the Spice Girls (originally called Touch) sold more than 30 million copies of their debut album Spice. Their song Wannabe earned them a Brit Award for best British Single. It may be a little shocking that this group never won a Grammy, considering they’re the most successful all-girl group in history having sold over 80 million records worldwide.
Fun Fact : Geri’s Union Jack Dress from the 1997 Brit Awards sold at a Hard Rock Cafe Auction for $68,000, becoming the most expensive piece of pop star clothing ever sold in 2007. And guess what? The dress has a Wikipedia page of its own!
4. BACKSTREET BOYS
Selling over 145 million records worldwide, the backstreet boys is the best-selling boy band in history. The group rose to fame with their debut album, Backstreet Boys in 1996. Since Sade, they are the first group to have had their first nine albums reach the top 10 on the Billboard 200. Their song Quit Playing Games (with my heart) managed to get to no. 2 of the Billboard Hot 100, which earned them a platinum-award.
Fun fact : Marvel Creator Stan Lee made the Backstreet Boys into comic book stars. He created a comic called "Backstreet Project" and only one issue was ever printed.
Westlife was originally signed by Simon Cowell. They have sold over 50 million records worldwide making them 34th amongst the biggest-selling singles artists in British music history. Their single My Love, which made it to No.1 on the UK charts was allegedly used as part of a CIA torture program in Afghanistan. According to the ACLU the “music pounded constantly as part of a scheme to assault prisoners’ senses.”
Fun Fact : Early in their career, Westlife performed as the support act for Boyzone and the Backstreet Boys in Dublin.
The bubblegum dance group ToyBox is known for their hit singles Tarzan and Jane, Best Friend and The Sailor Song. These songs are often mis-credited to Aqua, due to the likeness between the vocals of Aneela and Lene Nystrom Rasted. Besides having similar sounding vocalists, we noticed that Toybox and Aqua have other similarities, one of which is the fact that Tarzan and Jane and Barbie Girl are cartoon parodies.
Fun Fact : Aneela has sung the Bollywood song Say Na from the film Bluffmaster.
