Golpo Holeo Shotti: Film Review

Rating: ★★★1/2
Verdict: A well-written and moderately-executed supernatural thriller that stoops but spooks.
Horror, thriller and the supernatural are the rarest to be well-enunciated in Indian films. To begin with, the official Bengali remake of Tamil film, Pizza, at the least manages to hold the viewer’s pulse till it hits the end. Birsa Dasgupta returns to direction after delivering the dark humored Obhishopto Nighty. Golpo Holeo Shotti (A story, but true) is laid out well and serves the purpose of creating a make-believe story that first engages, then confuses and ultimately delights the viewer with a stirring climax.Rudra (Soham Chakraborty) and Anu (Mimi Chakraborty) are in dynamically different professions leading a live-in relationship. She believes in the existence of spirits, while he waves off the possibility of the dead sharing an intimate space in our lives. The film in the beginning is slow-paced and establishes the relationship between the writer and the pizza delivery boy. Anu firmly believes that Rudra will have his moment and experience the dead that will change his life forever.

The film has a list of names in its supporting cast that performs faithfully. They add tempo to a script that picks up pace nearly forty minutes into the film. Rudra’s boss at the pizza joint has a daughter who has been possessed by Mrinalini, a soul seeking revenge from Rudra. While he escapes this haunting encounter, Rudra is aloof of the series of supernatural experiences waiting at the end of the tunnel.

The direction is commendable and the editing is a key point in the film’s success. The rushes are edited keeping a close eye never to slow down the archetypal structure of a suspense-thriller. The film is a huge disappointment where performances by the principal cast are to be taken into account. Mimi and Soham’s performance only have a downfall apart from a few scenes where the actors show some flair.

The film is also accessorized with songs that intervene and delay the suspense. Rudra is out for delivery to one of the customers who keeps him waiting while she sneaks in to get the bill amount. After a long wait when Rudra finally moves in her bedroom he finds the woman stabbed and killed. The doors are locked and Rudra is held hostage by supernatural powers in the haunted villa. What happens next is a series of occult occurrences which leads the viewer to opaque conclusions, some that might be true while others, merely illusions.

Amongst the recently-released horror flicks, Golpo Holeo Shotti is a strong contender that delivers effectively defective material which could have been better but yet makes a worthwhile watch. The film traces Rudra’s attempt to get out of the house and takes the audience closer to unfolding the truth.

Golpo Holeo Shotti belongs to a genre less experimented in Bengali cinema and hence deserved a cast adept at instilling belief. And yet the editing techniques, creative shot compositions and sound design makes this remake a satisfying treat. For enthusiasts of horror flicks, Golpo Holeo Shotti makes up for the lack of a decent entrant in the genre in Tollywood. Why should you watch this film?

The film is commercially viable that comes packaged with an august storyline. For a few thrills and sinister visuals, Golpo Holeo Shotti deserves your attention.
