Describing the Good, the Neutral & the Bad – the Hollywood Way

Gone are the times when we would only see characters in movies who are absolutely heroic or totally villainous. We now get to see characters who are much more human with characters that come in shades more than just black and white.
It is not difficult to understand the difference between the good, the neutral and the bad. It would have been even simpler if those were the only distinctions in a person's character. These three terms are lacking when you want to describe someone like that. Thanks to the Alignment chart courtesy of Dungeons and Dragons, it has become simpler to put people into nine categories instead of the simple three. If you are still wondering how this chart works, with the help of Hollywood we've come to your rescue.

Lawful Good

Hollywood - BookMyShow

These are the kind who believe that doing good is above all and when their own principles might be at odds with the law, that's when the trouble starts. Characters like Superman and Spock from Star Trek are perfect examples.

Neutral Good

Hollywood - BookMyShow

Neutral good people walk a fine line between upholding the law and doing what's right. They might follow the rules until it reaches the desirable destination but will not hesitate to deviate from it if it does not yield the desired results. Gandalf the White from Lord of the Rings and Robin from The Dark Knight Rises should explain this better.

Chaotic Good

When you know what's right and believe that the end justifies the means whatever they might be, you are one of the chaotic good. The law and the social structure is merely a hindrance, which doesn't let them achieve justice. V from V for Vendetta and Sirius Black from Harry Potter are the best examples here.

Lawful Neutral

Hollywood - BookMyShow

This kind of people upholds law above the good and evil. As long as their following orders, it doesn't matter whether their actions fall into a particular category. James Bond is one such movie character who perfectly matches this personality and Neo from The Matrix series would also belong to this category.

True Neutral

Hollywood - BookMyShow

True Neutral are rare since they don't really have the motivation to do some good or take over the world. They also have little desire to follow the law nor work towards totally disregarding it. Characters like Sherlock Holmes and Han Solo from Star Wars can very well fit here. They are also called sociopathic sometimes.

Chaotic Neutral`

If you don't care about good or evil but you are not averse to raining chaos on people around you in fear of being called predictable, you can safely say that this box is the right fit for you. Deadpool or Tyler Durden from Fight Club will offer you company in this bracket.

Lawful Evil

Hollywood - BookMyShow

Taking over the world while setting personal rules of conduct and order will put someone right into this category. To understand better, you should ponder over the actions of characters like Darth Vader from Star Wars or Hannibal Lecter.

Neutral Evil

Hollywood - BookMyShow

Greed is what drives this kind of people to commit the atrocities they do. But thankfully, they will do no evil until there is a payoff at the other end. Hans Gruber's actions in Die Hard and Lord Voldemort from Harry Potter should be sufficient to explain this.

Chaotic Evil

There is one character who defines this type the best. The Joker from The Dark Knight. He has no real motivation to commit his atrocious actions than to spread panic and turn others like him. If you don't remember him, Joffrey Baratheon and Ramsay Bolton from Game of Thrones ought to explain it.

Which other characters according to you might fit into these boxes? Tell us in the comments below and don't forget to share.
