Most Hollywood movies don’t make it to theatres in India. This year’s Palme d'Or winner, The Square, however, had a screening at the MAMI Film Festival earlier this month. Another film that was competing for the prestigious award at the Cannes Film Festival was Good Time. An American crime-drama film directed by the Safdie brothers, it stars a popular face and some more familiar ones. Yes, we are not used to seeing Robert Pattinson in a serious movie, but this one will change your mind about the actor’s prowess.
Good Time is based on the story of two brothers (Connie played by RPatz and Nick by Benny Safdie) who attempt a bank robbery. They almost succeed, but an altercation with the police sends the mentally handicapped Nick to a holding cell. Connie tries to release his brother from jail using any means possible. He manages to get another convict to escape, who later helps him release Nick. Their plans go awry and Connie ends up in a place he least expected to be.
The film was heavily praised by the critics at Cannes and even released internationally in August this year. The lead actor stood out for his performance in a movie that proved to be both a visual and aural treat. The film’s score, which won the Soundtrack Award at the Cannes, has been provided by Oneohtrix Point Never (original name: Daniel Lopatin). We won’t be surprised if the composer makes his way into Oscars' final selection next year.
But the good news is that you can now watch Good Time in cinemas around you. The movie is all set to have a limited release (only one day) with shows being screened at a few theatres across India.
