2017’s biggest musical is finally coming to theatres this month. The Greatest Showman – inspired by the story of how P. T. Barnum started the Barnum & Bailey Circus – is a biographical period musical drama film directed by Michael Gracey. It stars the Wolverine of Hollywood, Hugh Jackman, as P. T. Barnum, paired opposite Michelle Williams, who plays his wife. Other members of the circus include Zac Efron (a stage actor), Zendaya (a trapeze artist), Rebecca Ferguson (a singer), Keala Settle (a bearded woman), and Yahya Abdul-Mateen II (an acrobat). Prior to its release, the film has already received three Golden Globe nominations – Best Motion Picture (Musical or Comedy), Best Actor (Comedy or Musical) for Jackman, and Best Original Song for ‘This is Me’. Needless to say, the release is much-awaited to see if the movie can live up to its hype.
The story of The Greatest Showman shows the journey of Barnum since he loses his job as a tailor. Unemployment pushes him towards exploring his creative ideas and he gatheres a unique crew to put up a first-of-its-kind circus. This later became the famous traveling Ringling Bros. and Barnum & Bailey Circus, which derived much flak from crowds for its portrayal of physical abnormalities. Yet, Barnum was the first showman of his kind and his circus led to the idea of what we today call ‘showbusiness’. Complete with music and dance performances, his story is narrated in a magical way – pleasing to both the eyes and the ears.
While The Greatest Showman has a Christmas release in most parts of the world, here in India, the musical is slated to release on the 29th of December. We hope to end this year on a mesmerizing note and there is nothing better than watching this movie in its full glory in theatres.
