India has always been known for its rich history. Whether it is the history of its people, culture, religion, or just the country itself, there has always been loads for any person to learn, let alone a historian. The great subcontinent that the country is a part of, it has had numerous rulers through the centuries. Some empires had some great stories to tell. It is hence little surprise Bollywood decides to recreate those tales in an epic fashion.
All set to release this August, Mohenjo Daro is one such film directed by Ashutosh Gowariker. With Hrithik Roshan and Pooja Hegde in the lead roles, the film is set in the ancient city of Mohenjo-daro in the era of the Indus Valley Civilization (2600 BC). The film is about a man who falls in love with his enemy`s daughter, who is a dancer.
Below is a list of four of Bollywood’s most prominent war heroes in a historical setting, all based on real rulers:
Ranveer Singh as Bajirao
Bajirao Mastani (2015)
Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the film’s stellar trio of Ranveer Singh, Deepika Padukone and Priyanka Chopra among others play out characters set during the Maratha rule in 1700 AD. Grossing over INR 350 crore at the box-office, the film received numerous awards, including Ranveer Singh for Best Actor, who effortlessly portrays Peshwa Bajirao I. It is based on Bajirao and his understandably controversial relationship with his second wife, Mastani (Deepika Padukone).
Hrithik Roshan as Akbar
Jodhaa Akbar (2008)
Directed and produced by Ashutosh Gowariker, this film too boasts of a big star cast with Hrithik Roshan, Aishwarya Rai and Sonu Sood in the lead roles. The film is about Mughal Emperor Akbar (Roshan) who marries Princess Jodhabai (Rai) as part of a political marriage of convenience, causing Jodha to resent him at first.
Dilip Kumar as Salim/Jahangir
Mughal e Azam (1960)
This K. Asif-directed film is surely one of the greatest epics of all time, making it a milestone in this genre of films. Starring yet another celebrated trio of Prithviraj Kapoor, Dilip Kumar, Madhubala, the film follows the love affair between Mughal Prince Salim (Kumar), who went on to become Emperor Jahangir, and Anarkali (Madhubala), a court dancer. Salim’s father, Emperor Akbar (Kapoor), disapproves of the relationship, which leads to a war between father and son.
Shah Rukh Khan as Ashoka
Directed and co-written by Santosh Sivan, this film is a dramatised version of the early life of Emperor Ashoka, of the Maurya Dynasty, who ruled most of the Indian subcontinent in 3rd century BC. Shah Rukh Khan plays the titular role while Kareena Kapoor plays the role of Princess Kaurwaki.
