Green Stars

Our planet today is plagued with huge environmental concerns. Unless we address these various issues seriously, we are surely headed for disaster. If anything has to be done, it is definitely in our hands. When you are a celebrity, you are expected to be a tad more responsible to the society around you and taking up issues whether environmental or anything that needs attention becomes a natural thing to do. Celebrities have the power to influence a wider audience. Few of them though go out of their way to do to be part of causes that they support wholeheartedly (i.e. not when a film is up for release or something on those lines). On World Environment Day, we present to you some Bollywood celebrities who have expressed concern and done a fair bit for the environment. They constantly strive to work in this sphere and need to be applauded for their work.

This Indian model, actress, producer and humanitarian is widely known for the number of social causes she is associated with. From female foeticide to rural and educational development and a lot more, Dia has been at the forefront of burning issues that affect our lives on a regular basis. She is a nature lover and has shown her love for the environment by being a part of various groups and associations that work tirelessly for the environment. This beauty is associated with Wildlife Trust India and is the ambassador for Sanctuary Asia’s tiger conservation program. She keeps visiting forests, meets forest rangers and even writes about these issues. She is also a supporter of Greenpeace India, a global movement of people taking action for a green and peaceful future. Dia is one of the youngest members of the Advisory Board of Anandana and supports the noble cause of Greenathon, an NDTV-Toyota Green campaign that was India’s first ever-nationwide campaign to save the environment. She is also the eco-ambassador of Panasonic. Woah! the list is endless.

Gul is known to be associated with Green Commandos, a platform that promotes practical solutions, simple steps and small changes people can make to create to tackle environmental problems. She also built herself a green home outside Mumbai, which is solar and wind-powered and also boasts of rain water harvesting and composting systems. One of the main focus of her Gul 4 Change a.k.a G4C of The Col. Shamsher Singh Foundation, of which she is the driving force, is the environment.

Though Rahul has been away from the silver screen for a while, be assured he is continuously working for some cause. He is the founder and chairman of The Group of Groups, an umbrella organisation for 51 Mumbai charitable organisations and NGOs. In 2009, he toured Canada, delivering lectures on global climate change under the auspices of Climate Action Network and demonstrated with protesters at the Copenhagen Climate Change Summit. He is also an ambassador for Planet Alert. He has always been someone to generate awareness for causes he supports. A true activist in his right.

In 2012, Abhishek Bachchan was honored  with a Green Globe Award for "outstanding efforts by a celebrity" to fight climate change. He has been associated with a lot of other causes also. Good going, Abhishek.

So are you doing your bit for the environment? If not, pledge today. It is never too late to start.
