Hangover 2: Repeat Telecast

What to look out for: The monkey

What not to look out for: Novelty

Hangover 2 feels like a re-run of the first except in a different city. From the structure to the situations, from the format to the graph, everything is exactly the same. It’s like a tribute to the first rather than a sequel. The first edition was insanely popular because we didn’t expect it to be so preposterous. But the second time over we expected something better, more insane. I suppose the makers were banking on the incredible opening any sequel to the Hangover was bound to receive.

So Stu is getting married again to a lovely Thai girl Lauren. He decides to opt for a quiet, pre-wedding brunch instead of a Bachelor Party, but ends up having a beer on the beach with his best buds Doug and Phil, with the man-child Alan and Lauren’s brother for company. Of course everything goes wrong after that and instead of a tiger, a missing tooth, a baby and a missing groom, they wake up with a drug peddling monkey, a Mike Tyson Tattoo, naked Mr. Chao and the cut up finger of a missing brother-in-law. They begin to piece together their night just like in the first from there on.

Alan and Chao seem like the only characters capable of salvaging the script with their spontaneity. The gags are mostly stale and slightly forced, but more importantly they are predictable. Save a few genuinely hilarious situations, Hangover 2 is disappointing. It sort of ruined it for Hangover 1 lovers. Hangover 1 used to be the film on everyone’s watch list when among friends on a particularly boring day. After watching Hangover 2, you feel differently about Hangover 1. Some films just shouldn’t have sequels.

Verdict: Go to the theatre with very low expectations
