Happy Bhag Jayegi: Film Review – A Perfect Comedy of Errors

Verdict: A very delightful return for Diana Penty to the big screen!

The makers of Tanu Weds Manu are back with another great comedy and this one is themed on weddings too. Happy Bhaag Jayegi is directed by Mudassar Aziz, produced by Anand L. Rai and Krishika Lulla and we see Jimmy Shergill again.
Happy Bhaag Jayegi wastes no time beginning the chain of mishaps and misunderstandings that make up the entire film. Things go awry from the very first scene itself and the first half simply flies by. It starts in Amritsar with the wedding of Punjabi kudi Happy/Harpreet Kaur (Diana Penty) and local politician Daman Singh Bagga (Jimmy Shergill). Soon enough, she flees the scene but things don’t go according to plan, and Happy accidentally lands up in Lahore, Pakistan.
Happy, apart from being a running enthusiast (she could have very well been a medal hope for the country), is a happy-go-lucky girl, who simply follows her heart, disregarding logic and the consequences of her actions. While she was supposed to elope with Guddu (Ali Fazal), she jumps into the wrong truck and lands up in the house of Bilal Ahmed (Abhay Deol), who, like his father, is a well-respected diplomat. Much to his resistance at first, it becomes his task to get her safely across the border (she has no passport) since she threatens to spoil his reputed name through media. Helping her out is Bilal’s fiancee Zoya (Momal Sheikh) and local police officer Afridi (Piyush Mishra) who both play obliging roles.
The film is shot in Amritsar and Lahore, constantly swinging back and forth, ensuring constant drama. It entertains abundantly in the first half, but sadly the second half doesn’t quite manage to maintain the same pace and seems to fizzle out. The film has some great laugh-out-loud scenes that have been intelligently written, devoid of any slapstick humor.
This is a very warm return for Diana Penty who hasn’t appeared on the big screen since the 2013 film Cocktail. She looks gorgeous and is a delight to watch on-screen, perfectly portraying the chirpy, playful and notorious nature of Happy. Jimmy Shergill plays the role of a Punjabi politician with great ease, and even though he plays a serious, no-nonsense character, he has really good comic timing throughout.
Why You Should Watch This Movie:
Watch it for some really fun comedy and applaudable performances by every one, especially Shergill and Penty.
